Description of Activities and Setting

Students will be sitting in their seats and I will ask them questions to get their
minds thinking about culture diversity. What is culture? Is everyones
culture the same? What is your culture? Encourage students to talk about
how they are different from other people in their class and how they are the
same. Students should remain seated and raise their hands to answer
questions. I will be standing at the front of the room.
Today we will be exploring cultural diversity and how it is important to make
sure you are accepting of others differences. By the end of the lesson you
should be able to write a three-sentence paragraph of the story we will watch
later on and include a reason you should accept people for their differences.
Before watching the provided video students will be given questions to think
about while watching to answer when the video is over. What are some
different places you heard? What was the name of the recipe? What
country were all the people going to? Does this make America culturally
diverse? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZQl6XBo64M. After the
video students will be asked the questions posted above to answer. Students
will raise their hands and wait to be called on to answer questions. I will be
standing at the front of the classroom.
I will tell students a story of two children who made fun of each other all the
time. They made fun of their difference such as; hair color, eye color, what
they ate, drank and how they spoke. Eventually, the two children became
worst enemies and everyone around them started noticing different things
about themselves and not liking them, all because these two children made fun
of each other for their differences. After this story is told, as a class we will
identify the problem in the story and why the children were fighting. We will
then identify why we should accept others differences. I will write the
sentences on the board underlining important words to use in your story
during the independent practice, so the students have some structure, such as;
The children were fighting because.. and we should accept others
differences because.
During independent students will listen to this read aloud of the book The
Sandwich Swap. The story, much like the one in the guided practice, will

involve two girls who eat different foods and eventually start making fun of
each other for it, which escalates to bigger things. Before students begin
watching I will give them questions to think about throughout the story: Why
are the girls making fun of each other? How could they have resolved the
problem right away? How would you feel if someone made fun of you like
that? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvEr6FsVoBI. After the video
students will be instructed to write a three-sentence paragraph, like the one we
did with the other story, using the words on the board. The paragraph should
identify why the two friends were fighting and give one reason for why we
should accept peoples differences.
Formative: Asking questions throughout lesson
Summative: Collect students writing and assess learning by identifying if they could
recognize why the girls were fighting in the story and why you should be accepting of
peoples differences.
Have a few students share what they wrote and discuss what they wrote. Ask
students what they learned today.
