1) Topic: Plot and Character Purpose: to show that plot can change character
This is a beginning activity to plot and starting with characters to show how they can be
changed by plot.
2) SOL Info: Standard 6.5
o The student will identify the plot and character elements of narrative structure
o Describe cause and effect relationships and their impact on plot.
o Explain how character and plot development are used in a selection to support a
central conflict or story line.
3) Lesson Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to
o Determine the changes a character goes through as an effect of the plot of a story
4) Lesson Steps:
I will begin by introducing plot and asking students to define what they think it is.

Teacher Actions
Ask students what they think the
definition of plot is and discuss times
where characters are changed by plot
in stories theyve read or movies
theyve seen
Introduce the reading of The Recess
Queen and ask them to focus
specifically on ways the Recess Queen
is changed by the plot of the story.
Read through page 10 of The Recess
Queen and stop so they can fill out the
top half of the chart describing Mean
Jeans character in the beginning of the
story
We will briefly discuss what they have
written down
Finish reading the rest of the story and
ask students to fill in the second half of
the chart describing Mean Jeans
character at the end of the story.
Discuss as a class.

5) Closure activity/assessment:

Student Actions
Students will offer suggestions of what
plot is and participate in discussion.

Students will listen as the teacher


reads and fill in the top of their chart
when instructed.
They will offer to share what they have
written describing Mean Jeans
character.
Students will listen as the second half
of the story is read and fill in the
second half of their chart at the end.
They will offer to share what they have
written down and will participate in
discussion about how Mean Jeans
character changed throughout the
story.

Teacher Action: Prompt students by asking to share what they wrote on their worksheets
about Mean Jeans character in the beginning of the story and at the end. Ask students how
the plot played a role in changing her character and what other factors also play an
important role.
Student Action: Students will tell what they wrote down on their worksheets and offer
suggestions explaining how the plot changed Mean Jean and what other factors influenced
her change (Katie Sue).
