APRIL IS AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH

Autism was reported to have affected 1 in 68 children in 2014 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network. When people refer to “Autism” today, they are usually talking about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), which are five complex, brain-based disorders that affect a person’s behavior as well as social and communication skills. The Centers for Disease Control describes ASDs as: “developmental disabilities that cause substantial impairments in social interaction and communication and the presence of unusual behaviors and interests. Many people with ASDs also have unusual ways of learning, paying attention, and reacting to different sensations. The thinking and learning abilities of people with ASDs can varyfrom gifted to severely challenged. An ASD begins before the age of 3 and lasts throughout a person’s life.” Autism is four times more likely to affect boys than girls, and is found in all racial, ethnic, and social groups. There is no known single cause for autism, although the best available science points to important genetic components. Through twin studies, scientists have determined that autism is a genetically based condition. On a nationwide level, the Puzzle Piece symbol reflects the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Also, since every puzzle piece is different in some way, a puzzle piece accurately represents the diversity of the individuals affected. In addition to the puzzle piece, the official color for National Autism Awareness Month is a bright royal blue.

Dallas ISD Administrations Building 3700 Avenue, Dallas, Texas

Although the Texas weather makes it difficult to decipher, believe it or not we are actually in the spring season! I trust everyone had a restful and

recuperating spring break and Easter holiday weekend. Now our students are STAAR testing, and, amazingly enough we are assiduously moving toward the end of the 2015-2016 school year.

As a couple of updates, we would like for the participants of the TEI Class Action Grievance to know we are still standing up and standing strong for you as the suit heads to TEA for the Level III decision appeal. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the TSTA attorneys involved.

We also understand that DISD employees are beginning to receive their Proposed Nonrenewal letters. These letters begin a 15-day timeline to request a hearing. It is important to know that if you do not want to resign, you do not have to! If you have received a letter, but have not sent our office a copy, please do so immediately. It will be forwarded to TSTA, and an attorney will be assigned to you. Please call our office at 214-821-2061.

I hope each of you continues to find daily successes, and I look forward to seeing you at our End of the Year Celebration next month!

 ANNIE GARMON – Pat Raney SC / Bus Driver DISD AR: David Griffin was selected

DISD AR: David Griffin was selected for April because he is an AR that NEA-Dallas can depend on and trust to attend meetings, grow the organization, learn and share with fellow members, and serve wherever there is a need. David has been an NEA-Dallas board member for many years, and continues to share the benefits of belonging to NEA/TSTA/NEA- Dallas with others each year.

DCS AR: Annie Garmon is one of our ARs at the Pat Raney Service Center. As one of the three ARs at her bus lot, she knows it is important to keep in close contact with the local office on any issues that may be occurring at her worksite. She works hard and is always available as a liaison between organization and member.
