Population Evolution Lesson Plan (Direct Instruction)

Teacher:Julie Koshy

Subject/Grade: Biology

Date: Mar. 18, 2016

Standard:
S4.C4.
PO1. Identify the relationships among organisms within populations, communities, ecosystems,
and biomes.
PO2. Describe how organisms are influenced by a particular combination of biotic (living) and
abiotic (nonliving) factors in an environment.
PO3. Assess how the size and the rate of growth of a population are determined by birth rate,
death rate, immigration, emigration, and carrying capacity of the environment.
Objective, SWBAT:
Describe the ways a population can evolve over time.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT:
Identify the different types of evolution.
Describe the five methods evolution can occur in a population.
Evidence of Mastery:
Students will take a quiz that asks them to list the five ways evolution can occur in a population
and identify the graph that shows directional selection; a score of 8/10 will show mastery.
Key vocabulary: natural selection, genetic drift,
mutations, gene flow, sexual selection, directional
selection, stabilizing selection, & disruptive selection

Materials: 15.2 PowerPoint, 15.2 PowerNotes,

projector, lab notebooks, writing utensil, and
population evolution quiz

Guided

Instructional Input

Opening/Anticipatory Set:
Weve discussed evolution throughout the entire planet and what a population is and how it is impacted.
Today we will be joining those two concepts to discover how populations within an ecosystem evolve
over time.
Teacher Will:
Use a PowerPoint presentation to
describe the ways a population evolves.

Student Will:
Listen to the explanations and take notes
of the most important facts, using the
PowerNotes if they choose.

Differentiation
Students who have difficulty writing can be given the PowerNotes (guided notes) for the
students to fill in. Also students who are unable to write may use a computer to type their notes.
Teacher Will:
Use an interactive animation to
demonstrate how different methods of evolution
impact the allele frequencies in a population.
Show animations that compare the different

Student Will:
Participate in the interactive animation.
Pay attention to the animation and take any
additional notes as directed by the teacher.

types of natural selection.

Differentiation
Students who have difficulty writing notes can be given a fill in the blank worksheet to go
along with the animation.
Teacher Will:
Provide the students with a quiz that
covers population evolution and the types of
natural selection.

Student Will:
Complete the quiz individually.

Differentiation
Students who need extra time may complete the quiz during lunch or after school.

Closure/Lesson Summary:
What is the key idea when talking about population evolution? What other questions about population
evolution do you have?
