JR East has been working to increase Shinkansen train speeds to improve customer service. They conducted high-speed tests from 2005 to 2009 which informed developments in the Series E5 and E6 trains. Key technologies adopted include low-noise pantographs, sound insulating panels to reduce pantograph and bogie noise, covers between cars to reduce noise, and an aerodynamic nose shape and braking system to operate stably at high speeds.

JR East has been working on operating Shinkansen trains at faster speeds
so as to increase customer service. We conducted high-speed running tests from fiscal 2005 to 2009 with high-speed test trains (FASTECH360), and the results of that development have been adopted in the series E5 and E6. Main developments adopted by the series E5 and E6 are as follows: Low-noise pantographs Pantograph noise insulating panels that block transfer of noise from pantographs to areas along the track Sound-absorbing panels to prevent transmission of noise generated at bogies and under the car body
Smooth covers between cars to reduce noise generated between cars
Nose shape that reduces micro-pressure waves and low-noise snowplow shape Brake system that generate stable braking force from high speeds Car body tilting system that reduces centrifugal force when passing through curves at high speed
