Independent study & mentorship is a

course which allows students to work
with mentors of their choice, for a
possible career path understanding and
opportunity.

We get to understand the profession

more and more through multiple projects
such as surveys, weekly journals and
research.
We are required to keep a weekly journal
and maintain an up to date weebly
portfolio discussing all assignments.

Texas Teachers
program

My mentor is now employed by Texas

teachers, a private company that works
with districts for people to get
alternative certification. This applies to
people who have degrees in anything
besides education!

The deferred cost of $4,000 is spread

out over your first year as a salaried
teacher, usually in monthly installments
and always interest-free. Remember,
you only begin paying off your program
balance once you start your teaching
job. Starting salaries for teachers in
Texas have never been higher, and
many districts offer stipends for teachers
in high-need areas.

Mentor in action

But what does she do? My mentor

basically grades teachers on their
capability of succeeding in a classroom
including management, discipline and
teaching mechanisms.
The applicants are working toward
certification while paying back these
dues to become full time, qualified
teachers.

After 3 visits with an evaluator (my

mentor) these teachers qualify to take
an alternative test proving their
capabilities.

TExES Tests

Two types of tests:

Content

This is a test of your

content mastery for a
given subject and grade
level.
There is a specific
content test for just
about every one of the
60+ certification areas.

Every time you pass a

content test it makes
you Highly Qualified
(HQ) in that subject
area. This is an
important step in
getting hired.
PPR Test
The Pedagogy and
Professional
Responsibilities (PPR)
exam is a theory test.

You only take this test

once you have been
hired and are teaching
on the probationary
certificate.
You must complete a
required review
provided by Texas
Teachers before you
can register.

The experience

I get to go with my mentor as she

evaluates teachers of different grade
levels, curriculum and experience
working for a teachers certification.
