English 12

Descriptive Paragraph
A descriptive paragraph allows writers to pick one element -- such as a person, room or
scenic locale -- and explain in detail how the subject looks. Your aim in this type of
writing is to paint a picture with words for the reader. You can follow a simple recipe for
writing a well-developed and focused descriptive paragraph. This will require you to
concentrate on staying on topic and doing some brainstorming.
Use page 98-99 and/or page 101-103 in Frankenstein as a guide.
Step 1
Take some time to think about a setting that you want to describe. Be sure to think of
some adjectives that best describe your setting.
Step 2
Develop ideas for possible topic sentences. Your topic sentence should sum up the
information you're going to convey to readers. Include an adjective that describes your
topic in the topic sentences you're considering.
Step 3
Come up with bold phrases that describe your topic. These should flow from the
adjectives you thought about in Step 1. Then use these phrases to create several
sentences that will be used to support your topic sentence in the body of the
paragraph. Paint a picture with words for the reader, making reference to the five
senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch and taste) as you write your sentences and make
comparisons for the reader.
Step 4
Organize your sentences in a logical manner that flows well for the reader. In addition,
provide transitions between sentences where possible.
