recentcrimethathappenedintheirneighborhood.Thesemenaretaskedondeciding
thefateofayoungkillerslife,andhaveahardtimecomingtoanagreement.Sowhy
writeapaperaboutthis,youmayask.Wellithinktherearethreemajorproblemswith
thissystemofgovernmentandIwillusethisplaytoshowyouhowracism,group
dynamics,andbiascanspillthebeansandruinsomeone'slife.
Thefirstproblem,thatmanypeopledonotrealizeisaproblem,isracism.Inthe
playyoucanseethattheconvictiswhiteandeverybodyelseinthestory(exceptforthe
guard)isalsowhite.That'swhenyoumayask,howcanyouusethisstorytoexplain
whatracismhastodowiththegovernment'spunishmentsystem.Wellletmetellyou
thatforallmeninthebigOlUSAthereisa1in9chancethatyouwillgotoprison.But
ifyouareblack,1outof3blackmenwillgetsentencedtoprison.Thatsprettyscaryif
youthinkaboutit,especiallywhenisjust1in17forwhitemales(TheSentencing
Project,2016).Howdoesthishappen?Inalotofcasesitcanbethejury.Therehave
beenmanycaseswheremajoritywhitejurieswillruleagainstthecriminaljustbecause

heisblack.Howsickisitthatwearelettingskincolorgetinthewayofhavinga
perfectjusticesystem.
Thenextproblemisgroupdynamics,orhowthegroupworkstogetherand
actsaroundeachother.Haveyoueverbeeninanargumentwithsomeoneyouhate?
Whetheryou'rewrongorwriteyoujustdon'twanttoadmitthatyouwerewrong.So
whathappenswhenyouhavetwojurymembersthatjustdontlikeeachotherandhave
differentopinions?Ahungjury.Thisexactthinghappensintheplayneartheendwhen
#7decidesthatheistheonlyonethatstillwantsthekidtodie.Whenhedoesthisit
meansthewholegroupcannotcometoadecisionjustbecausethisonemandoesnot
wanttoworkwiththeotherpeopleinthegroupwhichmeansthatheisjustthrowingthe
lifeofthekidintotheair.
Thelastmajorproblemisbias,andthismeansanykindofbias.If
someonehasabiastooldpeople,whichhappensinthebook,theyareeithermore
willingornotwillingtolistentoevidencegivenfromanelderlyman.Thiscanalso
heavilyswaythevotesofthejuryandintheendcouldkillaninnocentperson.In
anotherinstanceifapersonreallydoesn'tlikethecolorredandtheperpetratorhappens
tobewearingaredshirt,theperpisnowjustscrewed.TheAmericanPsychological
Associationhasagreatstudyaboutacertaintypeofbias.Amockjuryexperiment
investigatedtheeffectsofauthoritarianismonjurorandjurydecisionsandexaminedthe
generalizabilityofthegrouppolarizationhypothesisforasimulatedjurytask.132high
and125lowauthoritarians(asassessedbytheCaliforniaFScale)listenedtoamurder
trialandthenmadejudgmentsaboutguiltandpunishmentasindividuals,in6person

juries,andagainafterdeliberationsasindividuals.Aspredicted,bothhighauthoritarian
jurorsandjuriesreachedguiltyverdictsmorefrequentlyandimposedmoresevere
punishmentthanlowauthoritarians.Further,highauthoritariansshowedmorepre
discussionpostdiscussionverdictchangesthanlowauthoritarians.Resultsalso
supportthepolarizationhypothesisinajuryparadigm.Deliberationsproducedashift
towardgreaterseverityofpunishmentforhighauthoritariansbuttowardincreased
leniencyforlowauthoritarians.Guiltverdictsshiftedtowardacquittalforalljurors.(20
