We,
the
undersigned
faculty,
staff,
and
student
club
leaders
of
the
University
of
Windsor
Faculty
of
Law,
express
our
full
support
for
the
Black
Lives
Matter
Toronto
Movement,
and
for
those
working
to
end
anti-Black
and
other
forms
of
racism
across
Canada.
The
implementation
of
these
demands
is
necessary
to
improve
the
lives
of
racialized
and
indigenous
peoples
across
Ontario,
not
just
of
Toronto.
To
be
the
truly
open,
pluralistic
society
Canada
holds
itself
to
be
requires
dismantling
both
express
racism
and
the
systemic,
invisible
processes
of
exclusion
that
continue
to
be
inflicted
on
racialized
communities
in
Canada.
Indigenous
and
racialized
communities
are
subject
to
over-policing
practices,
practices
which
research
demonstrates
are
not
effective,
and
which
have
profound
and
damaging
consequences
for
individual
and
community
dignity,
and
for
the
ability
to
achieve
secure
socio-economic
status.
We
therefore
call
upon
the
city
of
Toronto
and
the
province
of
Ontario
to
implement
the
Movements
demands,
listed
below,
and
on
all
municipal
police
forces
to
grapple
with
the
important
issues
these
demands
provoke.
Immediately
release
of
the
name(s)
of
the
officer(s)
who
killed
Andrew
Loku
and
lay
charges
accordingly.
Immediately
release
to
the
public
any
video
footage
from
the
apartment
complex
where
Andrew
Loku
was
murdered.
Adopt
the
African
Canadian
Legal
Clinics
demand
for
a
coroners
inquest
into
the
death
of
Andrew
Loku.
Condemn
the
Toronto
Polices
excessive
use
of
force
and
ongoing
intimidation
tactics
against
Black
Lives
Matter
Toronto
protesters.
Overhaul
of
the
provinces
Special
Investigations
Unit,
in
consultation
with
families
of
victims
of
Police
violence,
the
Black
community,
and
the
community
at
large.
Commit
to
the
full
elimination
of
carding,
including:
the
deletion
of
all
previously
recorded
data,
reframing
of
regulations
to
prohibitions,
consistent
implementation
policy
amongst
different
police
boards,
and
concrete
disciplinary
measures
for
officers
who
continue
to
card.
Immediately
release
of
the
name(s)
of
the
officer
who
killed
Alex
Wettlaufer,
and
lay
charges
accordingly.
