Health Information Management Associate of Applied Science


Curriculum
The Health Information Management program is fully accredited by the Commission on
Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Upon
successful completion of the HIM program, students are eligible to take the national certification
exam to become a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). The curriculum includes a
professional practice experience (PPE).

Ambulatory Coding
Introduction to principles, guidelines and conventions for assigning

patient encounters for outpatient facility services. Students should
possess proficiency in basic medical terminology and human anatomy
and physiology. Additional out-of-class assignments are required. Three
classroom, two lab hours per week
Quality Improvement, Statistics & Research
Organization and analysis of data in health care quality programs
including quality assessment and monitoring, utilization and risk
management and medical staff credentialing. Theory and application of
health care statistics including data definitions, computation of formulae
and research principles. Two classroom, two lab hours per week.
Health Information Resource Management
Planning, organizing, staffing, budgeting and analysis of management
systems along with job standards and performance evaluations
emphasizing development of supervisory management, leadership and
communication skills. Two classroom, two lab hours per week.
Healthcare Data in Reimbursement
Organization of health care delivery system including managed care and
capitation. Theory and use of reimbursement systems such as Diagnostic
Related Groups, Ambulatory Payment Classifications, Resource-based
Relative Value Scale. Discussion of data flow from admission to billing
and analysis of casemix. In addition, other external forces, such as

PPE EXPECTATIONS
HILLCREST HOSPITAL CLEVELAND CLINIC SYSTEM
The PPE experiences will strengthen my academic experience and expose me to various
positions within the HIM Department. I will complete the tasks of each job type, shadow
managers and directors during departmental and organization meeting, and project-based tasks
that take a period of time to complete. I will work under the supervision of a registered health
information administrator (RHIA), registered health information technician (RHIT), or other
qualified individual. The PPE experience will allow me to:

Demonstrate competency in quantitative and qualitative analysis of health records


Retrieve health data stored in both physical and computerized formats
Describe the incomplete/delinquent record process from analysis through the record
completion state
Apply ICD-9-CM (or ICD-10-CM) codes, CPT codes, DRGs and other classification
systems to specified health records
Release privileged and non-privileged medicolegal information in accordance with
affiliating agencies policies and procedures in accordance with state and federal
regulations
Describe the facilitys revenue cycle and the individual components of the cycle
Produce professional and descriptive management documentation in the form of job
procedures, job descriptions, ergonomic assessments, and other management reports
