Withmostofthenativesscattered,thecolonistsexpandedacrossMaryland.PresentdayCatonsvillewas
settledinthe18thcentury.Intheearly19thcentury,acountyroadalongthePatapscoRivernamedthe
FrederickTurnpike,laterdesignatedRoute144wasopenedbytheEllicottfamilytoservetrafficbetween
theirflourmill,EllicottMills,andBaltimore.Catonsvilleasweknowittodaywassettledalongthisroute
byRichardCaton,undertheauthorityofhisfatherinlawCharlesCarroll,asigneroftheDeclarationof
Independence.Travelersalong"theturnpike"(asitwasthenknown)restedandconductedbusinessinthe
area,causingCatonsvilletogrow.
ThelargeVictorianandColonialhomeslocatedinCatonsvillewerebuiltbywealthyBaltimoreans.
Originally,thesecommunitieswereusedassummerresidencestoescapetheheatinBaltimore.Eventually,
asinmanycommunitieswiththeintroductionoftheautomobileandelectrictrolley,familiesbeganto
resideinCatonsvilleyearround.BaltimoreattemptedovertheyearstoannexCatonsville,thelastattempt
in1918,butallattemptswererebuffed.ThecommunityremainsanunincorporatedtowninBaltimore
County.ItishometoSpringGroveHospitalCenter,thenation'ssecondoldestcontinuouslyoperating
psychiatrichospital.
SamuelClemens(MarkTwain)madehislastpublicappearanceonJune9,1909,atthecommencement
ceremonyofSt.Timothy'sSchoolforGirlsinCatonsville,tofulfillapromisehemadetoayounggirlhe
hadmetonthesteamerMinnehahain1907.
Catonsvillewasbrieflymadequitefamousduringthe1968protestbythe"CatonsvilleNine",duringwhich
draftrecordswereburnedbyCatholicantiwaractivists.
In2002,theMarylandlegislatureissuedaproclamationdeclaringCatonsvilletobe"MusicCity,
Maryland",becauseoftheconcentrationofmusicalretailstores,venuesandeducationalfacilitiesinthe
area.
In2007MoneymagazinerankedCatonsvillethe49thbestplacetoliveintheUSA,thirdbestinMaryland
andVirginia.

ItiscenteredalongFrederickRoad(MarylandRoute144),formerlythemainroadfromBaltimoreleading
topointswest.JohnnycakeRoadandAcademyRoadformthenorthernandnortheasternbordersof
Catonsville.CatonsvilleisborderedbyWoodlawntothenorth,Baltimoretotheeast,byArbutustothe
southeast,byIlchestertothesouthwest,andbyEllicottCitytothewest.
