Standard: Reading
Cluster: Phonics and word Recognition
Objective:

ELA.3.R.C7.1

know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
decode multisyllable words.

Specific Objective: Students will decode multisyllabic words with 90% accuracy.

Method(s):
Direct instruction
Modeling
Group work
Materials:
Laminated block sheet
Dry erase markers
Multisyllabic Worksheet
Multisyllabic Word list
Direct Instruction:
We know that a syllable contains one vowel sound. If a vowel is silent it is not counted as a
syllable. For example, fire contains one syllable. Write the word everything on the board. If we
look at the word, everything, we notice that when we say this word there are five vowels. When

we pronounce the word there are four syllables. Lets separate the sounds to make sure.
Ev/ery/thing. There are three syllables in this word. Lets look at the word information. This
word contains 5 vowels. Lets sound out the word to see how many syllables are in it.
In/for/ma/tion. There are four syllables in this word. The spelling of the word does not matter
when trying to separate the syllables. We must sound out the word to count the syllables.
Guided Practice:
Students are to get out their laminated block sheets. I will list some multisyllabic words on the
board. Students are to separate the syllables in the words on the block sheet. The first word is
January. After the students separate the syllables on their block sheet, I will separate the word on
the board. Jan/u/ar/y. Repeat with the following words.
Virginia, bullying, ordinary, irregular, beautiful, America, identical, alligator.
Differentiation:
Tier 1:
Allow more time for students to separate the words into syllables.
Tier 2:
Allow students to work with a more advanced partner for guidance on separating syllables.
Tier 3:
Have students to work with struggling students. Use more difficult words for assessment.
Lesson Closure:
When we decode words, it is necessary to sound the words out. The spelling doesnt always
determine how many syllables are in the word.
Independent Practice:
Students are to work with a partner, following group rules, to sound out multisyllabic words.
Students are to take turns saying the words and the partner is to determine how many syllables
are in that word.
Assessment:
Students are to complete the multisyllabic worksheet. To meet the objectives, students are
required to complete the worksheet with a 72%.
