Narrative
This curriculum map comes from Stetson Hills in the Deer Valley School District. The following lessons have been created for
a 6th grade classroom in which I student-taught last semester. These lessons will be taught to approximately 110 students in 4 different
classed each having roughly 27 students with varying academic abilities.
Mini Lesson One
Sleep
PO 1. Record information (e.g., observations, notes, lists, charts, map labels and legends) related to the topic.
To begin this lesson, have students complete the list of questions using complete sentences. After students answer the questions,
lead a whole class discussion on what they know about the importance of sleep. The questions students answer will be:

What time do you usually go to bed? What time do you usually wake up?

On average, how many hours of sleep to you get?

Do you nap at all during the day? Do you desire to nap during the day?

Do you feel that you get enough sleep, too little sleep, or over sleep?

CURRICULUM MAP
Next, have students read the Article Your Head to Toe Guide for Sleep. There are 3 black bolded
headings in this article. Have students write down 1 key takeaway from each article and be prepared to
discuss after the reading. Discuss the article and have students share out key takeways.
Lastly, have students record there sleeping patterns over a week period. Students will be responsible for recording the day, what
time they went to bed, what time they woke up, how many hours of sleep they received, how they felt when they woke up, and how
they felt throughout the day. After the week is up, have a table groups discuss and graph their data based on how many hours of sleep
they got each night. Students should then analyze group results as a whole to determine trends and draw conclusions. End this sleep
lesson by having each table share out group or personal results.

Mini Lesson Two

Environmental Health
PO 1. Propose viable methods of responding to an identified need or problem.
PO 2. Compare possible solutions to best address an identified need or problem.
Begin this mini lesson by discussing what a carbon footprint is. Many students perform day to day tasks without thinking about
the effects of their choices on the environment. Then ask students to log onto their iPads to students to calculate their carbon footprint
using nature.orgs carbon footprint calculator. Students will then summarize their results in order to prepare for a class discussion.
Students will collect data to determine the whole classs carbon footprint. Engage the students in a discussion the importance of

CURRICULUM MAP

reducing our carbon footprint.

After this discussion, play the video What is a Carbon Footprint? What can you do to Reduce Yours? Instruct students prior
to the video to be thinking about realistic pledges they can make in order to reduce their carbon footprints. After the video, have
students discuss ways to reduce their carbon footprints that the video discussed, as well as any other suggestions they can think of.
Following the discussion have student create a Carbon Pledge to commit to for the remainder of the school year. In order for
students to make realistic pledges that they can uphold, tell students they will revisit their pledges towards the end of the school year
and they will recalculate their carbon footprints.
Mini Lesson Three
Sun Safety
PO 1. Evaluate the effects of the following natural hazards: sandstorm, hurricane, tornado, ultraviolet light, lightning-caused
fire.
Engage students interest in sun safety by playing the video The ABCs of Sun Protection on YouTube. Ask students to write
down 3 sun safety facts/tips provided by the video. This video introduces the importance of sun safety through the use of sunscreen
and reviews damaging effects of the suns harmful rays.
Next, have students brainstorm on the board different strategies to protect themselves against the sun. If time allots, allow 3 or
more students to share out stories of times where they did not follow sun safety rules and ended up regretting it. Some ideas students
may introduce for sun safety are:

Wear Sunscreen

CURRICULUM MAP

Wear Sunglasses

Wear protective clothing

Avoid the Sun during hours of 10am-3pm (roughly)

Find the shade

Remember to protect from sun on cloudy days too

After the video and brainstorming discussion, introduce the PowerPoint that will provide additional sun safety information.
The PowerPoint contains slides that inform students about the effects of the sun like skin cancer, and show images of over sun
exposure. Some slides will introduce more information about different sunscreens and what type of protection they offer. As an exit
ticket, have students turn in the 3 facts/tips from the video, as well as one Summer Sun Safety Pledge they will follow.
