Family Tree: An Evolution Story by Lisa Westberg Peters
If food becomes scarce blackbirds could have several options alternative food
sources (probably seeds or small invertebrates), move elsewhere (though blackbirds
are territorial & nearby territories may be full) or starve to death. Discuss how a
shortage of food can lead to changes in behaviour or features (e.g. blackbirds
becoming more aggressive towards others or those with beaks better designed for
eating seeds surviving better & gradually becoming a new species after many
generations).

page=darwin that enables children to try out some of the tools Darwin used on the voyage in HMS
Beagle.

Children work in pairs to research one of the creation stories that try to explain the great variety of
life on Earth today.

Biology Strand:
Plenary:
Give pairs the opportunity to tell the class about the creation story they investigated. Explain that in
the next session children will look at more detail at some of Darwins findings (evidence) on his
voyage on HMS Beagle, but also discover more about another scientist who was having similar ideas
at the same time Alfred Wallace! Point out that there is still some controversy about the theory of
evolution by natural selection (not amongst scientists) because it goes against the ideas in the Bible
people who still believe in the literal word of Genesis are known as creationists.
I can:
1. Define evolution as the gradual changing of the features of species over time.
2. Explain that Charles Darwin first published this concept in 1859.
3. Explain in simple terms how natural selection works.
