(Masyn Rocca 1/7/16- Art integration and math) Kinder Art. This is a very, very simple lesson for
early childhood educators like me that is still integrating art. Making numbers pretty
themselves can help children remember them better. They can learn numbers, or you can focus
on a number of the day and create a big poster where each children contributes to the design.

This website has a lot of lessons plans that you can search by subject area, categories,
and grade. Students will choose an animal, pick a possible career for the animal, and
draw the animal in the uniform and environment. Then either write a descriptive story or
poem about the animal in their drawing.

Explore how illustrations contribute to the telling of a story by creating illustrations to
accompany text, and then creating text to accompany illustrations. Students will explore
picture books (without words) and discuss the specific elements of the illustrations that
"tell" the story. They will learn to "read" illustrations as they look at the ways in which
pictures reveal information about the characters, setting, and plot of a story.

LOVE this lesson plan. The teacher reads the book Ladybug Girl and Bumblebee Boy to
the class. Then they do a trifold of drawings, showing their favorite playground activity,
their friends favorite playground activity, and a fun activity they played by compromising
with a playmate. This is followed up by partner discussion.

Lesson: Lets Talk About Painting
http://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/educators/lessons/grade-k2/Lets_Talk_About_Painting This lesson helps teach students how to discuss paintings
and the different types of art. Students will learn different vocabulary about art. The

teacher will read a book to the students; they will discuss art, and if time students could
create their own art that follows the criteria of the lesson. It is a way to teach students
about different types of artwork but also expanding their vocabulary.

Ways to Bring the Arts into Your Classroom
http://www.teachhub.com/12-ways-bring-arts-your-classroom
I love this website! This site gives teachers 12 creative and subtle ways to incorporate
Art into everyday lessons. My favorite method is number four: create a memory dance.
When students are learning something that has a lot of content, they are able to make
up a dance to remember it. It also gets the students to burn some energy and possibly
become more enthused about the topic that theyre covering. This method could be
used when learning about vocabulary, grammar rules or other major concepts that could
be thought of as confusing to students. I did something similar in highschool with the
bone structure in the human body, believe it or not I still remember most of the dance
and that was four years ago!
(Victoria Butler 1/13/2016) Writing Scrapbook Lesson
http://educationcloset.com/2011/11/18/writing-scrapbook-lesson/
This website provides lesson plans for teachers to integrate art into their classroom. It
focused on all subject areas, but the one that I chose focuses on students exploring
outside, collecting objects, then making them into a scrapbook, with a written
explanation of the meaning of the objects.

Animal Action Art Integration Lesson Plan of the Week
http://educationcloset.com/2011/05/06/animal-action-art-integration-lesson-plan-of-theweek/
This website provides a variety of lesson plans that teachers can use to integrate art
into their classrooms. The lesson that I chose to focus on is one that involves
movement, music and writing. This lesson is a great way for the students to be able to
create descriptive sentences, by describing the animals that they are listening to in the
music and then using movement as part of the process of displaying what they hear.

Reading and Music Lesson Plan
http://i0.wp.com/educationcloset.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/the-magic-operalesson.jpg

I like this lesson because it involves reading and music. It emphasizes comprehension,
plot, melodic patterns, and knowledge of a classical composer. I also like that its an
easy lesson plan for a teacher who doesnt have much of a musical background like
myself.
(Jessica LaLone 1/14/16) Arts integration for language arts: Language arts

This website provides lesson plans for teachers that involve language arts and art
integration. I chose to focus on one for 1-3rd graders titled: Cinderella vs. the Bullies:
Exploring Character Traits, Music, & Movement to Respond to Bullying. This lesson
allows comprehension of literary text using reading, comprehending, interpreting and
analyzing. It also helps students learn about bullying. Students act out what they
learned from the story such as bullying that was displayed and anti-bullying strategies
that were used.
(Ryan Glaser 1/19/16) Arts Integration for Social Studies: Islamic Tile Design, Our
Artistic Heritage: Art Forms and Media (Art and Social Studies)
http://thewalters.org/assets/pdf/lesson-plans/our-artistic-heritage.pdf
This site provides multiple different art integration lesson ideas. The goal/purpose of the
lesson is; Students will understand Islamic design elements by drawing and creating a
clay tile. I chose this lesson because I like how it utilizes and teaches students on a
minority culture in America. I want my students to not only have arts integration, but also
cultural integration. The better we can understand the different cultures of this world the
better off well be as a country in the future.
Ryan Glaser 2/2/16) Arts Integration for Social Studies: Mapping the past, Mapping the
present)
http://thewalters.org/teachers/resources/lesson-plans/mapping-the-present.html
This lesson idea is taken from the same source as my first. The lesson plans are pretty
vague; which I actually like myself. The basis of the lesson is comparing old maps to
new maps and seeing the changes through time. Additionally students will learn
valuable mapping reading skills. This lesson can expanded to have students create their
own maps of some kind. Depending on how its structured this lesson can be used from
2nd grade through 12th grade.

Over 100 great lessons for art integration!
(Rachel Hellar 1/20/16) Arts Integration for Social Studies: Living Museum
https://mrsswansonsclass.wikispaces.com/Living+Museum
The Living Museum is an interactive art integration activity that I remember from when I
was in fifth grade. Students are expected to research, write about and eventually
become a historical figure. By making costumes and designing sets, students are
creating visual art using multiple different mediums. Role-playing by performing
speeches as their character encourages the dramatic arts and allows students to fully
understand and engage the content.

Coming to America Lesson Plan (Art and Social Studies)
http://educationcloset.com/2011/06/10/coming-to-america-lesson-plan/
This site has plenty of art integration ideas for use across the curriculum but I like this
one because of the movement and thought processes involved. The lesson uses a
technique called tableau which is the creation of scenic still pictures with your body.
This term was new to me so I did a little research to gain better understanding. I found a
video that shows this technique being demonstrated within the classroom. I think the
whole video is useful but if you want to see specifically the modeling of tableau, skip to
the six minute mark. http://dramaresource.com/drama-strategies/tableaux/ . The
students have to think about how the scenery might look, how characters might feel,
etc. They may even play inanimate objects. There is a lot of thought and imagination
that comes into play with this lesson and with this technique.

This website is filled with different lesson plans and resources for teachers, one of
which being Reader's Theater. By integrating Social Studies into Reader's Theater,
students are acting out different scripts, developing their content area knowledge and
oral reading skills.
(Holly Ripard 1/20/16) Arts Integration for Social Studies: Personal Coat of Arms
http://thewalters.org/teachers/resources/lesson-plans/
I am including this website in general because it looks great. It has lots of lessons that
all integrate art into many different subjects for all different grade levels. It is important to
me at least when I am looking for these sorts of lessons or ideas that I can access
them fast and that they are free and with this website that is exactly what you can do. All
the lesson plans are downloadable for free and complete with everything you would
need to know about the lesson!
Holly Ripard
http://thewalters.org/assets/pdf/lesson-plans/personal-coat-of-arms.pdf
The Coat of Arms lesson is one where the students learn about knighthood and how like
was as a knight. This lesson is a few days long and includes background knowledges
and lots of discussion, but eventually the students will create their own visual arts piece
which will be a personal coat of arms. This lesson seems like a lot of fun and integrates
social studies and art well.

this in many different ways. After researching and learning about the instruments
students will do a performance, make their own instruments, present to the class, and
also make a story up in regards to their instrument. There are so many different things
in this one lesson that it will be able to help a large range of students with different
learning structures.

This is a lesson that explores the usage of research and adding art into it. It is ideal for
5th grade students and it allows students to research about world explorers. They will
conduct print and online research about the different explores and how the explorers
were able to conduct the exploring. Students are required to create become the explore
and figure out what they were thinking and feeling theyre also required to create a map
of the explorers route. This lesson is very engaging, it is split into five groups: engage,
build knowledge, apply, and reflect. I feel as if this is a perfect way to start to
introduction to explorers because it gets the student involved and excited about what
theyre learning.

Art Integration Advocacy Speech Video on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coW3HpXQURU
This video provides an accurate speech to why integrating the arts in the classroom is
important. I agree with everything that was said in the video. When art is integrated in
the classroom, students will learn and remember better and it will last for years to come.
Students mental, physical and emotional abilities also get better when art is integrated
in their classroom. Everyone has to be an advocate for the arts, not just the teachers
and school staff. We need to get parents, family members and especially political
leaders on board. Art Education is just as important as Math and Science and Art can be
used to teach the other subjects as well. Many people dont realize how important art is
until they learn more about it. I know because I use to be in the same boat until I started
to learn more about it. I always thought that you had to be artistic, musically inclined or
great at acting to teach art education, but its not true. Anyone can do it. I love how she
said that every student learns differently and most of the time, a student will remember
something easier when the student is engaged. I also liked how she said that art
education helps activate your prior knowledge, which is completely true.

Education. The research found that arts education helped students improve in core
academic areas including literacy and math, as well as educational skills such as
motivation, problem solving, and civic engagement. These are skills that the American

I introduce insects and arthropods with an interactive website, and students identify their
main parts. Then we look at field guides and online images of different insects. I try to
have real insects in viewing boxes or under the microscope for a close-up look. Then
students create an insect out of Model Magic or other clay. Student must have the
necessary parts to get a grade for the project, but I allow their colors to be whimsical.
Finally, they create realistic backgrounds out of box lids or 2-liter bottles with the bottom
removed. We display the insects in the hallway with insect trivia.

Bernadette Cole 3/30/16 Arts Integration and Mathematics (Third Sharing Opportunity)
https://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/educators/lessons/grade-912/Fibonacci_Visual_Art#Overview
This lesson plan may not be as useful to most of us as elementary educators but it was
the first thing I thought of when combining art and math. This visual arts lesson is mainly
for 9-12 graders (14 years and up) but could definitely be used for younger advanced
learners. The Fibonacci sequence and the golden ratio are connected to aesthetics and
students can easily apply connections to this lesson with their worlds outside of the
classroom.
Just in case the above lesson is not acceptable due to the older age suggestion, I have
included another resource:

ents/0aecb/word%20painting%20lesson%20plans.word.doc
This lesson plan uses word painting as an arts integration technique to help students
understand mathematical concepts (exponents, base numbers, and squares). Word
painting uses music writing to depict the meaning of other words and concepts. It is
extremely interesting!

Make your own Totem Pole

https://www.teachervision.com/tv/printables/0876287887_63_64.pdf
You can have the students make either a family or personal totem; while going over a
Native American unit.Through the unit you can teach them what certain animals and
symbols meant on the totem, so they can understand the cultural significance. You can
have them do this with modeling clay or you could have them draw the totem. I have
done a similar lesson in my arts class and it was a lot of fun to learn about the Native
culture and symbolism and then create my personal totem.

Dance and Math

This website is full of lots of rich curriculum, but I really liked the dance lessons. They
were for older, middle school, children but the dance-math lessons were awesome.
Bernadette Cole 3/31/16 (Tips for Successful Arts Integration - Second Sharing
Opportunity)
http://plays.about.com/od/actvities/fl/Getting-Your-Students-to-Work-Productively-inClassroom-Drama.htm
This site shares tips on how to get your students to actually participate in class
activities. This was a concern of mine because as students get in the upper elementary
grades, they become less willing to engage in play. I have noticed that when I do begin
a game with my class, a good portion of my students prefer to watch instead of
participate. This website should help. They include tips that are helpful and not always
as obvious such as Model a [new] drama technique with a scene from a familiar story
or Pre-determine the dramas end and of course they tell you how to do it. A bonus is
that after the initial article, there are more that pop up like Setting the Stage for
Successful Classroom Dramas and Introducing Tableau to Students

This site has several different math lessons that integrate art. Some examples it has
are: making snowflakes and studying symmetry, cutting geometric shapes to create a
collage, using ratios to make paint mixtures, and making measurements to make frames
for art projects just to name a few. It also provides links to other sources on math and
art integration which is great! I love a one stop shop for resources!!
A wonderful video shared by Meg:
https://www.facebook.com/Channel4News/videos/10153612286371939/?pnref=story

Demonstrates how the arts can be integrated with moderate to severe cognitively
impaired high school students. Challenges our preconceived ideas of what such
students can do! Thanks, Meg.

This website has multiple different lesson plans for integrating art into math.
The math lessons start on page 5 for grade levels between 2 and 5. There is a decent
variety of arts within these math lessons such as movement, visual, and poetry!

This website is actually pretty cool! It lays it out by grade, and then shows different art
projects you can do that incorporate math. Such as fraction flowers, measuring tools,
symmetery drawings, shapes, map scales, lines, etc.

This is actually a website that I used when I was in elementary and middle school to
practice math. There is an entire section that integrates art into the math activities. This
would be great to give students as an independent learning resource.
