Professional Practice Experience at Kettering Medical Center

As a part of the HIM program I was assigned at Kettering Medical Center for the Professional
Practice Experience (PPE). I worked with different HIM departments and received in-depth
knowledge of HIM work flow and processes.
Kettering Health Network (Jan 13th 2016)

Overview of functions performed in various HIM departments such as ROI, Deficiency


Tracking, Identity, Coding and Abstracting

Overview and functions of EPIC systems that provides one patient-centric database.

Observation on how the members of the HIM department work on Chart Deficiencies.
Review of how medical charts are monitored, delinquency tracking, generating follow up
messages, and tools/process used for resolving deficiencies in a timely manner and
ensuring that medical charts contain the critical information clinicians need and
improving reimbursement .

Kettering Health Network (Jan 20th 2016)

One on one with registration technician observing their interaction with patients,
discussion of Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN) , patient rights and advance directives.

Brief review in areas of pre-registration, preadmission testing and patient education.


Overview of the new check in process SafeChx that creates a unique ID with a simple
fingerprint scan and protects patients against medical identity theft.

Overall information on the process followed for prepping, scanning and indexing and
quality checking of the medical

Abstract on how records are scanned for indexing with various members who performs
scanning process in the department. Each batch is checked for indexing accuracy by
the staff. Every image that is scanned and indexed is finally checked to ensure
readability and quality

Overview of the workflow process of both the Analysis team and Medicolegal Process
team. We also go to work through 2 PHI request. Lora Pearson helped us walk through
the process

The process used for physician to access the computerized system is template driven.
Speech Recognition softwares are used by most physicians for dictation. Most of the
transcription process has been outsourced at Kettering Health Network.

Kettering Health Network (February 17th 2016)

We worked with ICD 10 trainer Kathy Murchland. She spoke briefly about how the
facility prepared itself for the conversion from ICD-9-CM to ICD 10-CM/PCS.

ICD 10 training for all the network employees began somewhere around spring of 2012.
Coders dual coded one chart per day in Feb of 2014.

We observed the process of dealing with physician notification and suspension, missing
verbal orders and missing H&P, missing discharge summary.
