Standard: Mathematics
Cluster: Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.
Objective: M.5.NF.1 add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed
numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an
equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators.
Specific Objective:
Students will successfully add and subtract simple fractions with like denominators with 90%
efficiency.
Method(s):
Whole group instruction
Materials:
Simple fractions worksheet
White boards/Markers
IPads
Direct Instruction:
Review: Top number of a fraction is the numerator, and the bottom number is the denominator. When we are
adding or subtraction fractions with like denominators, the denominator will stay the same, and the numerators
are added or subtracted. We also need to make sure that the fraction is completely simplified.
Guided Practice:
Write sample problems on the board for the students to solve. Students will work the problems on their white
boards, then random students will solve the problems at the board.
Differentiation:
Tier 1- provide extra review on explaining that if the denominators are the same, the product will have the same
denominator.
Tier 2- provide students extra time to solve the problems from guided practice.
Tier 3- Provide students with more complicated fractions to add. Ensure that all students are simplifying the
fractions.

Lesson Closure:
Students are to answer the following problems, they are to turn them in as they leave the room.
+3/4
2/3-1/3
8/10-3/10
2/5+1/5
8/9-3/9
Independent Practice:
Students are to practice solving simple fractions using the IPad app. Students are to complete the Simple
Fractions Worksheet.
Assessment:
Students will complete the worksheet with retrieving at least 75%.
