Lesson/Unit Title
I
Goals and Objectives
A Lesson Goals
What are the goals for this lesson?
(A1, A2, A3, A5, A8, A9, D3)

Students will be able to define and identify key

components of a story and they will also be able to
solve problems with their peers.
How to the lesson goals integrate with unit goals?
This will help students gain a stronger knowledge of
the important pieces of any given story. This will also
be useful information to know for MCAS.
Why are the lesson goals suitable for this group of
students?
This is ground information that will be built upon in
upcoming years. Also they will be tested on this not
only in my classroom but also for MCAS.
B Lesson Objectives
(A5, B1, B2, B3, B4)

What are specific behavioral objectives that meet

lesson goals?
For all students to be actively engaged, understanding,

Instructional Plan
A Pre-Instruction
(A4, A9, B1, D1-3,, E1-2 )

What student needs/interests/prior learning will be a

foundation for this lesson?
No background information is necessary.
How will you engage students in lesson content?
By having an educational game that is timed (makes
students work harder/faster) and then a fun activity at
the end with a prize. This makes students want to get
their work done faster so they can get to the fun stuff.
What curriculum connections can you make to broader
content area knowledge?
We will be reading multiple books this school year and
it is very valuable to understand the key components
in any reading.

Instruction
(B2, D3)

Presentation of new
material teacher role

Student role

Make lesson interesting

and interactive.

Keep an open mind to

new concepts and
activites.

Application (moving from

guided, scaffolded
practice to increasingly
independent
practice/gradual release
of responsibility)
teacher role

Student role

Go over all of the terms.

Explain the I have/Who
has game and make sure
they know it is going to be
timed.

Students must complete

the task in less than 1
minute.

Once the in class activity

is over I will divide the
class into 2 groups.

All students must

participate in the in class
activity in order for it to
work.

Work with the rest of their

team to finish the
scavenger hunt using
examples from our lesson
to find the prize before
the other team.

I will explain the game.

During the game I will
have music to go along
with my lesson.

C Closure
(B3)

How will you wrap up the lesson and anticipate future

learning in the unit?
Students will be able to use what they have learned
today to write a 1 page creative paper incorporating all
of the key factors of a story. There will also be a
matching vocabulary quiz for the students to show
what they know.

D Assessment

How will you know students reached lesson goals?

(A2, A3, B3b, B4)

If they can complete the I have/who has game in under

1 minute. Also if they get a good grade on the follow
up quiz.
What formative and/or summative assessment
strategies will you use?
Class discussion, in class activity, and in class game.
How will students be involved in ongoing assessment?

I will make it a point so that they use what they have

learned today in all future writing assignments.
How will students assess themselves?
If they can answer the I has/who has questions when it
is their turn.
III
Strategic Analysis of Instruction
A Management
What strategies will you employ to successfully
(C1-4)
manage student learning and behavior during this
lesson?
By adding fun to the lesson plan. Kids are more apt to
remember if the experience was memorable.
How will the learning environment support planned
activities?
Being able to set up clues around the room.
Using the computer for a power point and youtube clip.
B Options for
Differentiation

How will you provide for students with special needs

and/or English Language Learners?

(A3, A8, A9, B2b, B2d, B3b, D2)

I will make them feel included/ part of the class. I will

have a hand out for them illustrating the meaning of all
of the key parts to a story and a definition in their
native language. I also think group work would be very
beneficial to them.
How will you modify lesson for individual learning
needs?
Instead of writing a paper they can make me a picture
book illustrating the key concepts.
How will you integrate additional resources to extend
lesson?
If time at the end of the class they can start their
drawing and I will be there incase they have questions.
C Reflections on Lesson
(E6)

After the lesson I will reflect on how everything went. I

will see if the kids actually learned from my game. I
will see if timing them was useful and also if I give

them an incentive if they work harder. I will see who

took control of each group and watch who worked well
with who. Overall I would need to find out if I would
want to use this lesson again.
