Self Introduction
My name is Andrea Manning-Anderson and I am currently a junior at Arizona
State University and in my first term of the iTeach program. Previously I attended
Glendale Community where I received an Associates in Arts degree. Even when Im not
a student in the classroom, I spend most of my time in another, I work as a Teachers
Assistant at The Childrens Center For Neurodevelopmental Studies which is a special
needs school and habilitation center.
As a teenager I worked a series of odd jobs; such as various customer service jobs
and front office work. After High School I tried thinking really hard of what I could
possibly sign myself up for the rest of my life, and I procrastinated making a decision.
When I began college, I still didnt have a plan. I knew that I didnt want to be stuck in a
sterile environment all day, I knew I wanted ample time off per year, and I knew I needed
to make a decent living to support my infant son and I. In fact, I didnt commit 100% to
becoming a Teacher until I found myself working with children, I had finally found my
niche. I had never been so praised at a job before, and had never before felt like I knew
what I was doing so much. I finally had a job that I felt was truly important which
instilled pride in my work, and I didnt want to stop at just being an assistant when I
knew what I really wanted was to be a Teacher.
Based on the research of Madeline Hunter, Dr. Fred Jones, Dr. Harry Wong and
Richard Lavoie, my belief is strong in self-efficacy, and every student needs someone to
give them the tools and encouragement to be successful. Although it is very important,
teaching is more than making sure students understand academic material; being a
teacher is also becoming a moral compass for your students to reflect on. I believe that I
will make an extremely relatable teacher because growing up I dealt with a lot of
adversity that students face similarly today such as living in poverty, being adopted and
becoming a single teen parent. I want to make my classroom as accommodating,
accepting and inviting for every child of every background or ability; I want my students
to want to come to my class and get the most out of it that they can.

Room Layout

My layout design is based on the research of Dr. Fred Jones. The room is set up
for 38 students, 30 individual desks with an aisle between each row, and two adjustable
tables set up near the side of the classroom closest to the Teachers desk. This layout is
functional and ensures that all students will be able to see the Teachers desk (and be
seen by the Teacher) and the front white boards/screen projection area at all times.

Layout Rationale:
Teachers Desk:
The Teachers desk is located in the right corner of the room layout. It is forward facing so
I can see the whole class and so I can also be close to the white boards and projection
area.

Computer Station:
The computer will be on the Teachers desk, away from where the students have access.
Other misc.:
I have an area rug under my desk station just to add a little zest to the classroom, it will
be sprayed with flame retardant to avoid potential injury.
Homework station:
The homework station is a renovated bookshelf in between two storage units near the
front of the class, there will be bins divided by section number and grade level to avoid
confusion and disorganization.
White boards:
White boards are located at the front of the room so the whole class can see. The
projector shows right onto the white board, where a screen will show off whatever Im
playing for the day.
Storage units/filing cabinets:
There are two major storage areas in the front of the class, under the whiteboards. Those
are for Teachers stuff or whatever I need and want close by.
Bookshelves:
I have two bookshelves near my desk but visible to the classroom under the
Recognition bulletin boards. So that way whenever the students need a book or other
material they can see what I was looking for in a previous assignment.
Mounted projector:
Is located on the ceiling in the middle of the classroom so that way nobody has to turn
very much to see what is on the screen.

6
Television:
I have a television in the back of the classroom mounted in the corner, it will only be
allowed on for morning announcements as white noise/nonsensical commercials can be
distracting.
Trash cans:
I have two trash cans in my classroom, one by the door in the room and one by the
teachers desk for easy access to the students.
Students desks and tables:
I have 30 individual desks in my classroom (a little over zealous), but I also have two
large adjustable tables near the side/teachers desk for students with other physical needs
(handicap, larger size) however if I know I have a student that needs one of those chairs I
will create a seating chart that puts other students at those tables as well. Making sure
every student feels included is one of my major goals as being a Teacher.
Teachers Locked Cabinet:
The Teachers locked cabinet will be located near the Teachers desk for maximum
accessibility, pushed off to the side so it doesnt distract the students learning.
Bulletin board:
The classroom bulletin board will be posted on the side wall so everyone can view it, it
will have a classroom newsletter (updated monthly) as well as a best in show area that
motivates the students to do the best they can on every assignment.

7
Procedures:
Based on research supported by Harry Wong, classroom procedures must always be
taught (not told) at the beginning of the school year. Procedures, unlike rules, bear no
consequences. However, a procedure is a method or process for how things are to be done
in the classroom, and if they break down the students are to be retaught until they are
understood and executed correctly.
1) Beginning of Class:
Start with Bell work assignment of Teachers choice (could be small work sheet,
questions written on board etc.) Students will have 5 minutes to complete the bell
work, followed by group discussion on the questions or assignment.
2) Ending class:
Closure activity (again, assignment or task of Teachers choice example: half
sheet of paper and questions, calling on students to answer a question etc.)
3) Transitions between activities:
The Teacher will use an auditory signal or use a timer to prompt students into the
next part of the activity, will not continue until all students have acknowledged
the transition.
4) Managing student work:
Homework will be collected at the beginning of class by students dropping it off
in a bin labeled for their grade and section number (if I had two 8th grade classes,
it would be 8A or 8B). Graded homework to be handed back will be filed into
personalized folders for each student as to maintain privacy. Materials will be
laying on the homework turn in desk, waiting to be collected by the student in the
beginning of class.

8
5) Student Absences:
While still adhering to the school/district policy, absent work will be distributed
by the teacher to the student either personally or in a filed folder, the student will
be given 1 day per absence to complete work.
6) Late work:
Late work will not be accepted except under Teacher approved circumstances or
emergency situations.
7) Grading and recording student work:
Assignments, projects, tests will be graded in a timely fashion. Essays and written
tests maximum 1 week, multiple choice test 1 day, group and individual projects
will be graded day of (graded while presenting and given back the next day).
Grades will be recorded as soon as all assignments/tests have been graded.
8) Communicating with parents:
My goal is to always provide open lines of communication. I will have a 24 hour
email response/phone call return policy. I will also send out informal progress
reports or let specific parents know any incidents going on. I will also call or
email as positive reinforcement. Possibly make a newsletter depending on kids
ages.
9) Consideration of diverse learners:
To remember procedures being taught there will be an easy to follow list of our
classroom procedures, also have a large print To-Do list all placed where
students can visibly see. I will also strictly follow individual students IEPs and
504 plans.

Rules and Consequences:

Based on the research of Dr. Richard Lavoie, I have assembled 5 easy to follow rules in
my classroom. The students in my classroom should already know how to follow these
rules, and I will strictly enforce them as a reminder as well as reteach if necessary. These
rules will be posted in the very front of the classroom at eye level, somewhere where
even the students in the back will be able to see with ease. The purpose of these rules are
to create a safe learning environment and demonstrate an efficient running classroom
with minimal distraction. If these rules are not abided by there will be a series of firm yet
just consequences to proceed them.

10
The Rules:
1) Grooming in the classroom
Students will not use make up, personal mirrors, hairbrushes or stand up to braid
each others hair in the middle of the classroom. Applying make up and other such
grooming are to be done in private in the restroom in between classes or at lunch.

2) Only one student speaks at a time

In order to respect other students only one student will speak at a time and not shout
out answers or interject opinions at inappropriate times during the lesson. The
classroom should never exceed a conversational voice.
3) Stepping out of the classroom
Students will quietly step outside of the classroom to shuffle through their
backpacks for lost papers or assignments and not do so at their desks in order to
avoid distraction of others. Also, if more comfortable they may step outside to
cough or blow noses (that is not part of the rule, just allowed if wanted)
4) Respectful gestures
Students will refrain from eye rolling, mean comments, or any inappropriate
motion towards the Teacher or another student.
5) Staying in assigned seats
Students will stay in assigned seat until otherwise instructed by the Teacher
(especially during possible silent work time or video).

Consequences:
Consequences will be strictly enforced, firm but fairly in the following format; additional
consideration will be taken based on Teachers judgment or individual student IEP or 504
plan needs.

11
Consequence order:
Firs offense: warning/personal conference with student
Second offense: Detention at lunch
Third offense: Call home/after school detention
Fourth offense: Administrative referral
** The Teacher reserves the right to skip any of these steps based on the severity of the
situation.

Personal Summary
This plan was designed to be efficient, practical and provide a solid foundation for
my future students. In my classroom students will be respectful of one another,
create a safe learning environment and thrive into respectable young citizens. The
skills I teach my students will help prepare them for higher education as well as
developing their personal lives. My door will always be open for every student at
any time, and no one will be left behind or forgotten. I have high expectations of
my students (both academic and moral) and we will work very so we can ball a
lot (urban dictionary definition; To live the good life). My students will be
successful and they will believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.
