TEACHING SUMMARY PROJECT

Nursing 402-Career Pathway Assessment

Teaching Paper
Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to provide the student with the opportunity to
summarize - in detail - the development, implementation, and evaluation of an
instructional intervention for a specific client or professional group.

Approach to Assignment
I approached this assignment with the knowledge that infectious disease has a global
effect at a faster rate due to globalization, as well as how community members can better
prepare for such emergencies. My targeted group of learners belonged to the same
playgroup and the community they reside in had a large percentage of first generation
immigrants. I believed this teaching material was relevant to this group, based on their
expressed concerns about the recent Ebola outbreak and their frequency of international
travel. I saw there was a need for the individual and community to become informed on
where to access accurate health information and ways to decrease the threat of an
infectious disease outbreak in their community.
Reason for Inclusion
This project is being included in my portfolio, because it reflects my ability to put
together teaching material for an identified group and then evaluate the effectiveness of
the presentation. The different methods I used to facilitate the learning process for my
group of learners are demonstrated in this project. I was also able to provide evidence

from research literature on the nature and scope of a relevant problem and develop
instructional strategies for my target audience.

Curricular Outcomes
Critical Thinking

Uses nursing and other appropriate theories and models to guide professional
practice

The professional scope and standard of practice for public health nursing was chosen
for its applicability to the teaching project on infectious disease outbreak. The scope
of public health nursing includes health promotion, disease prevention, and
collaborating with the community for health improvement. The standard for public
health nursing related specifically to this project because it included the public health
nurse employing various strategies to ensure healthy communities.
Nursing Practice

Demonstrates an awareness of complementary modalities and their usefulness in

promoting health
The instructional strategies I used were chosen to increase the retention of the
subject matter being given to the group of learners. The instructional methods
chosen were verbal instructions, demonstrations, brief lecture, and group
discussion. Teaching aids utilized were written handouts, sink, water, soap, paper
towel, and a laptop computer for a power point presentation.

Communication

Expresses oneself and communicates effectively with diverse groups and

disciplines using a variety of media in a variety of contexts
I identified that different learning styles existed among the group of learners, by
using the Honey and Mumfords Learning Style Questionnaire. To meet the
learning needs of the different learning styles present in the group, I put together
teaching methods and teaching aids that would support their ability to process the
issue, exchange ideas and problem solve.

Teaching

Uses information technologies and other appropriate methods to communicate

health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention across the life span
To fulfill my objective for the group of learners being able to identify three
authoritative sources for health information, a power point presentation and
written handout were utilized. Other methods used for instruction were a brief
lecture, group discussion, and demonstration of correct hand hygiene by using the
teaching aids of a sink, water, soap, and paper towel.

Provides relevant and sensitive health education information and counseling to

patients, and families in a variety of situations and settings
The abundance of misinformation on infectious disease and helplessness on what
a person could do to help prevent an infectious disease outbreak was a concern for
this group of learners and presented a health education opportunity. The teaching
setting was informal and conducted in one of the learners house.

Evaluates the efficacy of health promotion and education modalities for use in a
variety of settings with diverse populations
This teaching project took place in a community setting. The teaching objectives
were evaluated for effectiveness using several methods. A performance checklist
was used to evaluate correct hand hygiene. A questionnaire was given to
determine if the learners understood the relevance of correct hand hygiene in
combating infectious disease. A verbal question and answer session was utilized
to evaluate understanding of recommended cooking times for raw meat and fish
and consequences of consuming raw food. Another questionnaire evaluated
learners knowledge of who was an authority on public health issues, such as the
World Health Organization.

Research

Applies research-based knowledge from nursing as the basis for culturally

sensitive practice
This group of learners profile was multicultural and multiracial. Each learner was
highly educated and engaged in frequent international travel. My research was
geared toward their concern about infectious disease spreading rapidly because of
globalization. I was able to show research on how Ebola became an international
public health emergency, and what can be done in the future to decrease the threat
in ones community and acquire accurate information on public health issues.

Leadership

Organizes, manages, and evaluates the development of strategies to promote

healthy communities

My foremost goal in teaching this group of learners was that they would be able
to gain new knowledge and insight in regards to infectious disease and then
promote their newly acquired knowledge to other members of their community. A
teaching plan was organized to increase the knowledge base of this group of
learners on infectious disease outbreaks. The instructional strategies I utilized
were evaluated after the teaching session was done on its effectiveness.

Professionalism

Demonstrates accountability for ones own professional practice

I decided to use the scope and standards of public health nursing to guide me in
the development of a teaching plan for community members. The ability to
reference the scope and standards was useful in making me aware of what a
public health nurse is accountable for in nursing practice. I was also cognizant of
the fact that the group of learners expected me to have a certain level of expertise
on health issues as a registered nurse.

Culture

Maintains an awareness of global environmental factors that may influence the

delivery of healthcare services
Because we now live in a world where infectious diseases are able to travel at a
more rapid rate, the importance of being prepared and reducing the potential for
infectious disease outbreak is more relevant now than ever. The group of learners
was greatly concerned about their susceptibility to infectious disease because of

various factors. I have become even more aware of the impact global health can
have on the United States.
What has changed through my teaching project?
This teaching experience increased my comfort level in teaching to a group. The
requirements for this assignment enabled me to be better prepared for the teaching
session, and decreased my stage fright. I felt that my knowledge also increased along
with the group of learners, because of the research I had to do regarding my topic of
discussion. The relevance of the choice of topic to be taught seems even more relevant o
now with the current outbreak of the Zika virus being an international health issue.
