Reflections
Pre-reflection: (what)

Communication and Collaboration

1. Why did you choose this community
Caring and the Catholic Health Ministry
agency for your service-learning project?
Servant Leadership and Global Health
Safe, Quality, Evidence-based Practice
We chose FeedMore as our community
Professionalism and Commitment to
agency because they provide hunger relief
Lifelong Learning
for over 200,000 people in the local area.
We wanted to help meet these individuals
most basic needs by meal packing and
providing nutritious food.

2. What do you hope to learn by performing

this service-learning project?
We hope to learn how we can better
serve the local community with continued
volunteering at FeedMore. We hope to
have a better understanding of the hunger
individuals face in our area so that we can
be better prepared as nurses to care for
them.

BSMCON NUR 4144 1-12-2015 td

3. What do you hope the community chosen

will learn through this service-learning
project?
As we serve at FeedMore, we hope that
the people we interact with will learn that
we, as future nurses, want to help fight
hunger in Central Virginia and that we care
about the people struggling and will be an
advocate for them in the healthcare field.

Mid-reflection: (so what)

1. What did you learn?
During our time at FeedMore, we
learned how essential volunteers are in
preparing daily meals as well as providing
the resources needed for the food bank.
Without the volunteer support, this
organization would not be able to do the
amazing work that they do in fighting
hunger in the Richmond community.

2. What difference did the project make?

The meals we prepared helped to provide
a healthy dinner to a local nursing home.
This experience helped raise awareness of
the vast deficit of nutrition support
BSMCON NUR 4144 1-12-2015 td

services available to the elderly, and the

local community as a whole.

Final Reflection: (now what)

1. Consider how you will act in the future as
a result of this experience
As a result of this experience, we feel we
are better equipped to serve our patients.
When we have a patient in need of food
assistance, we will be able to recommend
FeedMore. Now that we have been to the
facility, we will be able to speak from
experience about the services they provide.

2. What learning occurred for you in this

experience?
During our time at FeedMore, we learned
of the great need for nutrition support in
our local community. We discussed with
the staff various services FeedMore offers
in order to support hunger relief.

3. How can you apply this learning?

BSMCON NUR 4144 1-12-2015 td

We can apply this learning by educating

peers regarding the needs of the
community as well as encouraging others
to come volunteer at this organization or
donate to this cause.

4. If you could do the project again, what

would you do differently?
If we could work with Feedmore again,
we would like to be more hands on in
interacting and delivering meals to the
actual clients. The work that we performed
during this experience was all behind the
scenes so it would be cool to place an
actual face to the actual recipients
receiving these services.
