Modern Slavery

Human Trafficking is one of the worlds most profitable and one of the most rapid growing
organized crimes in the world. Organized crime and substandard life in developed societies: The
human trafficking syndicates in the United States. There is no cure for human trafficking and
there is little to no hope for the criminals that are sick enough to endanger another humans life
in such a horrible way.
Human Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of
persons by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of
deception, or of abuse of power. Abuse is one of the most prominent methods of human
trafficking. Abuse can come in many forms but in the world of human trafficking one of the most
well known forms is physical abuse. Physical abuse is the improper violation of another human
being in a negative way. The only way physical abusers gain power over their victims is through
physical abuse such as beating them or harming them in other ways. Manipulation and abuse go
hand in hand in this epidemic of human trafficking.
Manipulation is when the abusers use a cover up to lure their victims into the evil world
of modern slavery. They are lured in by false promises of a lucrative job, stability, education, or a
loving relationship. DeAnna Schlau, the Sexual Assault Response and Volunteer Coordinator at
Community Violence Solutions said there are two types of traffickers on the street guerrilla
pimps and romeo pimps, both have two totally different ways to manipulate prostitutes.
Guerrilla pimps or traffickers manipulate vulnerable prostitutes into the world of human
trafficking, they regularly use violence when dealing with prostitutes to keep them in line.
Guerrilla pimps play a major role in the manipulation of prostitutes because they usually are the

ones the vulnerable prostitutes work under and are the most influenced by. Pimps can use
physical force and verbal force such as profanity to terrorize or intimidate the prostitutes into
doing what they are told. Romeo pimps
are pimps who pretend to romance their
victims before they take advantage of
them. These types of pimps are rare but
most definitely use their techniques to
manipulate women. Romeo pimps are
different from guerrilla pimps because
guerrilla pimps abuse and take advantage
of prostitutes who are usual under their
control or living with them. Romeo
pimps take advantage of regular women
and prostitutes, women who are new to
or passing through an unknown part of
the world may run into romeo pimps who if you dont catch onto their scheme early can lead you
to be trafficked. Romeo pimps may look and act like standard men and can hoax you into a
date but if you agree to the date you are already considered to be human trafficked because
there is no turning back.
No matter the different jobs guerrilla pimps and romeo pimps have they both trick and
threaten their victims because that is their job to abuse women mentally and physically. Around
the world, human traffickers trick many people into slavery by false promises of good jobs or
good education, only to find themselves forced to work without pay, under the threat of

violence. - Lisa Kristen. Threatening women through sexual and physical abuse gives
traffickers the type of power that they yearn to have. Men who engage in human trafficking
believe women are subject to sexual violence because they are women and do not feel like they
are technically raping them because the pimp gives them permission. Guerrilla pimps and romeo
pimps are the cause of this terrible epidemic of exploitation.
Pimps and other types of traffickers can instill an
abiding fear inside of women and cause them to feel less
than human. Victims of human trafficking are crippled
with fear and work under coercion. Most trafficking
cases go undiscovered because the victims are too afraid
to come forward and inform authorities of the horrible
crimes that are going on. Prosecutor Juana Camila
Bautista, who heads the Mexico City prosecutor's
human trafficking office said "The main barrier is the
terrible fear victims feel that prevents them from
coming forward and reporting the crime. They don't
speak out. That's our biggest obstacle."
Another type of manipulation human traffickers use against their victims is language.
Traffickers can be from a totally different part of the world than their victims and use the
language they speak to communicate with other traffickers in a way the victim will not
understand. If the victim does not understand the language of the traffickers, the victim will
never be able to get out of the situation because the trafficker has a major social benefit over its
victim and the victim they will never know how and to whom they are being bought and sold.

The entire language barrier between the victims and traffickers can be a game changer in human
trafficking this is the reason for Middle East traffickers in London because French speaking
women will never understand their different languages.
Human traffickers have several motivations but the main reason is money. Money is said
to be the root to all evil and in the case of sexually abusing women for money, this phrase just
happens to be true. The buying and selling of women for a financial profit is human trafficking.
Corrupt men will find any way to make money either through selling drugs or other types
schemes but boosting your financial status by selling women is just inhumane. Human
trafficking is not a job to be proud of but it does pay well, it is after all a $32 billion industry.
Making profits off other humans for billions of dollars, what is the world coming too. Humanity
makes it hard to see the good in people when men and women are depriving other people of their
natural freedom and right to not be sexuallly exploited.

Sexual exploitation is the act of treating someone unfairly sexually in order to benefit
from their work. All sex workers have been exploited by their pimps to keep them in line or
just under the pimps control. Sex workers in Mexico City have 20 to 40 clients a day and charge
around $15 a time. Most or all of the money goes to their pimp. Often the girls are intimidated
with threats against them or their families. Some have been kidnapped, others lured away from
home with promises of jobs or seduced by pimps posing as boyfriends (Orozco, 2011).
Exploiting women or sexually abusing them its all for a financial gain.
Sex workers including the
children who are kidnapped and forced
into human trafficking and prostitution
are trapped and there usually is no
way out. Victims of sex trafficking can be
U.S. citizens, foreign nationals, women, men,
children, and LGBTQ individuals ... there are 4.5
million people trapped in forced sexual
exploitation globally (Polaris, 2016). Human
Trafficking is a never ending cycle, it is said that
if an individual is not found before 92 hours after
she is kidnapped he or she will never be found.
Lost forever in a system where you as a human
being no longer have your own rights nor can you choose who to be with or where you go. This
entrapment of other human beings is preposterous but it is a booming business financially so it
can never be stopped.

In society there is such a thing as visible human trafficking or sex work, such as
prostitution, 95% of prostituted women want out of prostitution but can't leave (Hughes,
2005). Prostitutes are usually trapped in human trafficking because their pimps are providing
food, shelter and clothing and without them they would most likely be homeless. There are other
types of evil lurking underground such as live human auctions, the sex trade and kidnapping that
you do not visually see out in the open. Visible human trafficking and prostitution is easier to
escape then the sex trade that happens underground. Usually romeo pimps are the source of
underground human trafficking, posing as girls boyfriends but really are leading them into a life
they cannot return from. Underground sex workers have no way out, traffickers usually expose
innocent girls to hard core drugs that befuddle their minds to the point where they do not know
what goes on around or to them. Sex workers usually overdose on drugs or commit suicide to
escape the horrors of their reality.

Once the sex workers are exposed to drugs they become addicted to it, fresh needles are
not provided as a luxury item so they usually
catch diseases as a result of it. There are
approximately 40 million people living with
HIV globally, so statistically female and male
sex workers are breeding grounds for
HIV/AIDS people who have to rape innocent
women just to have sex. One man who was
interviewed on sex trafficking said that he
only attends sex houses because he has a rape
problem. Raping regular women is against the
law but if the woman is a prostitute or being
human trafficked abusing them and raping
them no longer qualifies as a crime.
Human trafficking is the worst trap a female or male can fall victim to, long term issues
are bound to leave the victim with major life restrictions. Women catch sexually transmitted
diseases, endure pelvic pain or infertility due to several abortions and sexual abuse, they acquire
urinary tract infections and the environments that they live in is not suitable enough nor are the
resources they are provided with enough to cure different types of infections. Malnutrition in
women is common due to them not getting to eat enough and being mistreated. Sex workers are
abused leaving bruises and scars all over their body from being beat so many times. Traffickers
leave bruises on their sex workers in places that will not damage their physical appearance like

on their lower back and neck. These types of crimes go unnoticed when sex workers are used to
the abuse and when it is used just to keep them in line.
Foreign environments cause various types of mental issues. Anxiety, depression and self
hatred are all apart of the harsh mind frames sex workers are in. The mass environment and
lifestyle change is enough to drive an innocent person insane. Traffickers as mentioned earlier
also expose these women and men to hardcore drugs so they are never in there right mindset.
Once they come down off their high they realize the horrible situation they are still trapped in,
driving them into a deeper depression than they were already in. Anxiety disorder is a psychiatric
disorder causing feelings of constant anxiety, e.g. panic disorder or posttraumatic stress disorder.
Post traumatic stress disorder is common with human trafficking victims and prostitutes who are
being bought, sold, and sexually abused day after day.
The harsh reality of human trafficking is that it will continue to grow in the future and
will take and destroy thousands of men, women and children mentally and physically. Human
trafficking is a business that thrives off the exploitation of human beings by sick individuals.
What people around the globe need to understand is that human trafficking is a very prosperous
business that generates billions of dollars a year but is damaging the hopes and dreams of
someones future and their lives for a couple hundred dollars a day really worth it, I do not
believe it is. I believe the government needs to invest more time in trying to fix this horrible
epidemic.
