Competency Reflections

Competency 001: The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the development,
articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the
school community.
Involving the school community is an important part of a positive school culture. The school community
in my case encompasses a large number of people. Since my program is part of a cooperative there are
multiple schools who are a part of the school community. To satisfy this competency I represented the
cooperative in the Hearing Loss Association of America Walk 4 Hearing, volunteered with the
cooperatives Resource Fair for families, and worked with my schools deaf education team to collect
money for an ill substitute of ours. This competency helped me realize how big my school community is
due to the cooperatives structure. To continue to work towards this competency I need to look for
opportunities to reach out to the families of our students and even the larger Deaf community in the
Houston area.
Competency 002: The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all members of the
school community, respond to diverse interests and needs, and mobilize resources to promote student
success.
I was given multiple opportunities to communicate with the Deaf education team at my school as well as
the Deaf education PPCD team from both schools. This came in the form of morning team meetings,
PPCD share sessions, and attending campus improvement meetings. I gathered the information from
each of the meetings and ensured that the information was given to each of the staff members. This
competency helped me learn the importance of clear communication. It was helpful for me to have the
notes from the meetings sent out to the staff members. The staff felt like they were informed of what
was going on campus and they were able to use the notes as a reference in the future. To work towards
this competency I would need to seek out more opportunities for disseminating information to the staff
members as well as the families of our students.
Competency 003: The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical and legal
manner.
This competency is one that I strive to live every day. It is difficult to put on paper what actual tasks
represent this competency since it is so ingrained in everything that I do. The only task that I felt directly
focused on this competency was the planning and execution of parent teacher conferences. In these
conferences I had to be professional, fair, and ethical in my discussions about their student. More
opportunities to work towards this competency will arise as I obtain more leadership roles.
Competency 004: The principal knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of curricula and
strategic plans that enhance teaching and learning; ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction,
resources, and assessment; and promote the use of varied assessments to measure student
performance.
My position as a special education teacher, specifically deaf education, requires a lot of team planning
and data analysis. This competency was met with weekly team planning sessions and monthly language
data analysis. School wide data was also discussed at the CPOC meetings I attended, but I did not have
any data to contribute to those meetings. This competency becomes more important as an

administrator because I will no longer be looking at just a classroom of data but the data of numerous
students and teachers.
Competency 005: The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and sustain an instructional program
and a campus culture that are conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.
I was fortunate enough to be asked to sit on the interview committee for the hiring of new staff for the
upcoming school year. This allowed me to think about this competency and how these individuals will
continue to advocate, nurture, and sustain our cooperative and how they will fit with our current
students and staff.
Competency 006: The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation and development system to
improve the performance of all staff members, select and implement appropriate models for supervision
and staff development, and apply the legal requirements for personnel management.
A few opportunities for this competency occurred over the past year. One of them was the need for
staff members to receive dysphagia training and to become CPR certified. While I am not certified to
lead either of these trainings, I researched and worked with the appropriate school and district
personnel to ensure that these trainings happened for the staff members. The staff members are now
better prepared to address specific and unique needs of the students.
Competency 007: The principal knows how to apply organizational, decision-making, and problemsolving skills to ensure an effective learning environment.
Like Competency 003, this is addressed everyday as a teacher or administrator. As a result, it is difficult
to articulate the tasks since they occur every day. As mentioned in Competency 001, I was in charge of
the childcare at the cooperatives Resource Fair. I recruited volunteers and organized activities for the
children who attended. Through this experience I had to be organized, make some challenging decisions,
and solve problems that arose during the event.
Competency 008: The principal knows how to apply principles of effective leadership and management
in relation to campus budgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management, and technology
use.
Due to the uniqueness of my program campus budgeting was not an option for me at this time. To meet
this competency I decided to start a project of creating a digital inventory of all of the books that we
have in each specific classroom. This way when the teachers are planning from home they can look on
the inventory to see what books could be used to relate to the themes. Also, this will help with the
overall inventory for any future classroom or building moves. To address this competency in the future, I
would need to involve myself in some budgeting for the cooperative.
Competency 009: The principal knows how to apply principles of leadership and management to the
campus physical plant and support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.
I addressed this competency daily with my morning and afternoon bus duty. I am given the task of
ensuring that the students and other pedestrians are safe while the busses are loading and unloading. I
would have liked to have a little bit of experience with the campus safety and the physical building but
the opportunity did not arise. I did make attempts to communicate to my staff of some ideas and
suggestions on how to keep the students safe during emergency drills.
