Four Ways To Make America Cleaner And Greener

(NAPSA)If youre like most
Americans, chances are, you generate between four and five
pounds of waste per day. Whats
more, this country is behind the
curve when it comes to recycling
but that can be remedied.
There are many factors that
contribute to a lax attitude toward
recycling and they can be challenging to overcome. Sometimes
its not clear what can and cannot
be placed in a curbside recycling
bin. Other times, it can be difficult
to find where to recycle items not
accepted by a recycling program.
Thats why many consider education the most important step
toward increasing recycling rates.
Teaching children in school about
the importance of recycling can
help them grow into informed,
sustainably minded stewards of
the environment. If schools across
the country adopt this trend, children will be better equipped with
the knowledge required to limit
their environmental impacts at
home and in their communities.
Many adults also need a recycling intervention, considering
only 34.5 percent of the waste
generated in the United States is
recycled. The good news is that
there are a variety of ways to help
increase recycling rates, even for
typically nonrecyclable waste.
Here are four things you can do:
Call a recycler: For many,
simply knowing what items are
and are not accepted can be a difficult barrier to overcome. One of
the easiest ways around this roadblock is to contact the recycling
center and ask for a list of all
accepted materials.
Recycle at a nearby store:
Many home improvement retailers have started recycling fluorescent lightbulbs and many electronics retailers will accept your

e-waste for recycling or resale.
Paint retailers may even recycle
old latex paint cans and the grocery store may have a container
for old plastic bags.
Use a recycling database:
There are a variety of smartphone
apps and online tools that let you
search for businesses, facilities
and storefronts that accept traditionally difficult-to-recycle materials. Users simply put in a zip code
and the material to be recycled to
find the nearest location.
Find public drop-off locations: There are even recycling
options for traditionally nonrecyclable packaging waste. For example, by partnering with recycling
company TerraCycle, cereal producer MOM Brands recently
became the first company to open
nationwide public drop-off locations for cereal bag waste. Any
individual, business or school that
collects for the MOM Brands
Cereal Bag Brigade can become a
public drop-off location. Go to
www.terracycle.com to find dropoff locations.
Recycling options for previously hard-to-recycle waste are
becoming commonplace across
t h e c o u n t r y, a n d t h e y c a n b e
great ways to keep the neighborhood clean and increase recycling
rates.

Tips On Finding The Right HVAC Contractor

(NAPSA)A heating and cooling system is one of the most
expensive investments a homeowner can make.
It makes sense, then, to carefully select a contractor who will
help you find the right system for
your home, install it, and provide
the technical assistance needed to
keep it running efficiently.
To h e l p w i t h t h a t s e l e c t i o n
process, here are some tips from
the experts at the Coleman Heating and Air Conditioning brand of
Johnson Controls:
1. Learn as much as you can
about heating, ventilating and airconditioning (HVAC) systems. The
more you know, the better prepared you will be to conduct interviews with potential contractors.
2. Ask family, friends, co-workers, real estate agents and home
improvement specialists for
recommendations.
3. Visit the Better Business
Bureau website to check the consumer ratings of a contractor. This
site also shows the volume of complaints lodged against a contractor.
4. C h e c k f o r m e m b e r s h i p i n
professional organizations. Find
out if the contractor and the technicians in his/her company are
certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE).
5. Ask to see state and local
licenses and certifications for
refrigerant handling.
6. Verify that the contractor is
properly insured. Ask to see proof
of liability and workers compensation insurance for the contractor,
as well as any technicians and subcontractors the contractor employs.
7. Ask if the contractor performs the work or has a subcontractor do it.

Learn as much as you can about

heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems before
you interview or hire a contractor.
8. C o n s i d e r t h e c o n t r a c t o r s
length of service. Does he/she
have an established track record? Ask for a list of references
that you can contact. Check
these references, ask about performance and whether work was
completed on time and within
budget.
9. Do the contractor s services
include scheduled maintenance,
repairs and 24-hour service?
10. Expect the contractor to
conduct an on-site inspection, ask
questions about your home comfort needs, and address any questions you might have before making recommendations regarding
service or equipment.
After this occurs, he or she
should present you with an itemized and written estimate for proposed work and a final contract
that requires your signature before work can begin.
Begin looking for a contractor
well in advance of a project. This
will allow plenty of time to conduct a thorough search. That way,
you can be confident that the contractor you choose will possess the
expertise and integrity to meet
your comfort needs professionally
and affordably.

Investing In Improving Mental Health

(NAPSA)According to the
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC), about one in
every four American adults has a
mental illness of some kind. Now
there could be good news for them
and the people who care for them.
Whats Being Done
Two federal agencies are implementing the Excellence in Mental
Health Acta demonstration project and the single largest federal
investment in mental health and
addiction services in more than 50
years.
For too long, we have failed to
provide the federal infrastructure
and support needed to sustain a
strong behavioral health safety
net, said Linda Rosenberg, president and CEO of the National
Council for Behavioral Health
the unifying voice of Americas
community mental health and
addiction treatment organizations. With the Excellence Act,
that all changes.
How It Works
To improve the quality of care
nationwide, the Act establishes
federal status and criteria for Certified Community Behavioral
Health Centers (CCBHCs) that
provide comprehensive mental
health and addiction outpatient
services.
These CCBHCs are responsible
for basic primary care screenings
and services to address the
chronic conditions that drive high
costs and poor health outcomes
among people with behavioral
health disorders. Crisis services
play a critical role in de-escalating
mental health crises and diverting
individuals into care. The criteria
also emphasize the special requirements of populations such as
veterans, whose health needs,
Rosenberg says, the United States
has failed to meet.
Additionally, the CCBHCs will
break through barriers to work
with a variety of health system
partners, including primary care,
hospitals, VA centers and more.
Because many state systems
cant support the kind of comprehensive, coordinated care necessitated by the CCBHC criteria, the
Excellence Act requires the states
to establish a payment system
based on actual costs. That is

funding for historically underfunded community mental health
and addiction services. Also, a system of bundled payments will
either require or incentivize
value-based payments so providers can share in the cost savings their clinical care produces.
The bottom line is that when
people walk through a CCBHCs
d o o r, t h e y k n o w t h e y w i l l b e
linked to the services they need in
the broader health care system,
said Rosenberg. They know they
will receive better care coordination from a trained, competent
team of providers.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
will award planning grants of up to
$2 million to help states create
their certification processes and
develop their payment methods.
It is so important for organizations to make the case to their
state about why it should apply to
participate, said Rosenberg.
Planning grant applications
are due by August 5; grants will
be awarded in October 2015.
What You Can Do
Meanwhile, if you or someone
you care about is in crisis, seek
help immediately. The CDC recommends three steps:
Call 911.
Vi s i t a n e a r b y e m e r g e n c y
department or your health care
providers office.
Call the toll-free, 24-hour hotline of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at (800) 273TA L K ( ( 8 0 0 ) 2 7 3 - 8 2 5 5 ) ; T T Y:

Technology Takes User Safety To The Next Level

(NAPSA)Safety comes first
in any woodcutting task, especially when youre talking about
a table saw where a momentary
distraction can result in permanent consequences. The next
generation of these products
promises greater user safety to
go with the cutting performance
and precision that both pros and
advanced DIYers expect.
Now, innovative table saw technology delivers an extra layer of
protection. Led by Boschs REAXX
table saw with Active Response
Technology , a sensing system
detects human flesh that comes in
contact with the blade and rapidly
drops the saw blade below the
tabletop. This high-speed action
helps reduce the potential of serious user injury and occurs without
damaging the blade. When used
together with the modular blade
guard, the Smart Guard System,
the saw can provide the greatest
available level of protection.
After activation, the system
can be reset in less than 60 seconds. A single cartridge enables
activation for two incidents before
replacement; just rotate the activation cartridge and reset the
drop mechanism and the table
saw is ready to go. All necessary
parts, instructions and wrenches
are located onboard the saw. You
can see the saw in action at
boschtools.com/REAXXsaw.
An onboard control system features an intuitive, easy-to-understand LED light panel that communicates and manages saw
operation and indicates saw status. The color code is simple to follow: Green means the saw is
ready for use; yellow means the

A new por table table saw can

s av e t h e t o o l s yo u c a n t r e placeyour fingers.
system is in bypass mode for specialized cutting; red means the
saw is not ready; and a blue light
means the saw requires service. A
smartphone-enabled app communicates with the tool so you
always know saw status.
A 15-amp, 4.0-hp motor that generates 3,650 rpm does the job on a
saw that can move across a room or
a job site with equal ease. Electronic control soft-start, constant
response electronics and overload
protection represent advancements
in motor electronics that reduce
torque buildup and maintain cutting speed for greater control.
But a table saw needs to provide precision cutting as well as
maximum protection. Cutting features include an optimized rail
system that boasts a pre-squaring
fence for easy wood placement and
plenty of outfeed support for large
wood sheets. Put it on a portable
stand with large wheels and
youre ready to work anywhere
safely.

GLENWOOD CANARY
Help Kids Handle Bullying
(NAPSA)Theres good news,
bad news and better news when it
comes to children being bullied.
The good news is that the
incidence of bullying among teens
is at an all-time low.
The bad news is that one in
five kids still experiences bullying.
The better news is that there
are steps that parents, teachers
and others can take to prevent the
problem.
What To Do About Bullying
1. Spend at least 15 minutes a
day talking with your child.
Research shows this can build the
foundation for a strong relationship, boost your childrens confidence and build effective strategies
for facing bullyingwhether children are being bullied, engaging in
bullying or witnessing bullying.
2. K n o w w h a t s g o i n g o n a t
school, who their friends are and
any challenges they face. Read
class newsletters and school flyers. Check the school website, go

3. Encourage kids to speak to a
trusted adult if they are feeling
unsafe or are bullied, or see others
being bullied. The adult can give
comfort, support and advice, even if
he or she cant solve the problem
directly. Sharing concerns and fears
with a safe and caring adult can
bring about meaningful solutions.
4. Talk about how to stand up to
kids who bully. Give tips, including
using humor and saying stop
directly and confidently. Talk about
what to do if those actions dont
work, such as walking away or
seeking help from an adult.
5. Ta l k a b o u t s t r a t e g i e s f o r
staying safe, such as staying near
adults or groups of other kids.
6. Urge kids to help others who
are bullied by showing kindness or
getting assistance from an adult.
7. Model treating others with
kindness and respect. Kids learn by
observing adults. Even if it seems
like they are not paying attention,
kids watch how adults manage
stress and conflict, as well as how
they treat their friends, colleagues
and families. By treating others
with kindness and respect, adults

8. Have your kids take part in
activities, interests and hobbies in
and outside of school. This will
give them a chance to have fun
and meet others with the same
interests, building confidence and
friendships.

Improving Indoor Air Quality

Relax: The air you breathe at home can be clean and fresh, even with
all the windows closed.
(NAPSA)Picture this: Your
windows are closed, the air-conditioning is on and you and your
family are comfortable. Do you
really need to worry about indoor
air quality? According to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency,
you do.
Tightly sealed homes designed
to conserve energy also restrict
the flow of fresh outdoor air into a
home and limit the removal of
indoor air pollutants. Things like
dust, smoke, pollen, animal dander, particulates from mold, bacteria and viruses can irritate eyes
and breathing passages. In addition, gaseous pollutants that
come from chemical processes
involved in heating or cooling,
building materials, adhesives,
paints, varnishes, furnishings
and cleaning products can also
raise the level of indoor irritants.
Thats cause for concern, especially when you consider that
many Americans spend as much
as 90 percent of their day indoors.
Fortunately, you can find a
complete line of indoor air quality
products to combat poor indoor air
quality and its effects. A HEPA
whole-house air cleaner, for example, captures up to 99.97 percent
of particles that are 0.3 microns or
larger, helping to clean the air and
reduce allergy symptoms often
triggered by airborne pollutants.

There are also a number of

supplemental products designed
t o h e l p i m p r o v e y o u r h o m e s
indoor air quality:
W h o l e - h o u s e h u m i d i f i e r s
replenish moisture and reduce the
effects of dry air.
Whole-house dehumidifiers
eliminate excess moisture and
help prevent toxic mold growth
throughout your home.
Ultraviolet irradiation systems mount inside your air-conditioning systems indoor cooling
coil to continuously clean the coil
and drain the pan safely and economically by neutralizing mold,
bacteria, viruses and other
microorganisms.
H e a t r e c o v e r y v e n t i l a t o r s
replace stale, unhealthy air from
inside your home with a stream of
fresh air, extracting 70 to 80 percent of the heat from the stale air.
Energy recovery ventilators
perform the same functions as
heat recovery ventilators but with
the added benefit of controlling
moisture in your home.
In addition to improving indoor
air quality, many of these products from the Luxaire brand of
Johnson Controls increase the
efficiency of your air-conditioning
system as they deliver consistent,
dependable comfort.
