Deputy Randolph wants to ensure that his role in this case is reported accurately and has authorized release of the following statement: Deputy Randolph has faithfully served all citizens of Utah County for over 19 years. The media has reported that Deputy Randolph is a friend of the alleged perpetrator in the rape case. This is false. There has been additional reporting that Deputy Randolph gave a copy of the police file to BYU in an apparent attempt to initiate an honor code investigation into the victim in the rape case. This is also false. Deputy Randolph never intended that BYU take honor code action against the female victim. Rather, he intended that BYU investigate male students, particularly male athletes, who may have victimized women or otherwise violated BYU standards regarding sexual conduct. Utah County attorney Jeff Buhman properly dismissed witness retaliation charges once he was in possession of all the facts and Deputy Randolph's intent was made clear. The defendants attorneys efforts to paint Deputy Randolph as a bad actor here are a transparent attempt to deflect attention from the real issues in the rape case. Edwin cares deeply about the victim in this case and hopes that she is able to find comfort and closure. He also hopes that this victim's story might be able to effect positive change and prevent other women from undergoing a similar experience. ###
