Thursday April 7, 10:15-11:15

Procedure:

Before class: 5 min

Cut up cardboard
Grab paper for students to draw their picture on
Have students bring along a pencil and eraser, and sharpener
Walk to art room

Introduction: 3 min

Show the spring trees example, and explain that they are going to make spring tree
pictures, out of plasticine.
Explain that first we will read a book that has some plasticine art in it.

Body: 45 min

Activity 1: 15 min

Have students place their pencils and stuff on a table, reminding them that they need to be
by people they can get along with, that wont distract them; then come sit on the floor, near
the front of the room.
Read Picture a Tree by Barbara Reid, and point out all the different trees, and their
shapes, and the backgrounds. Discuss how the trees look different in different seasons.

Activity 2: 10 min

Show the video on barbarareid.ca that shows the making of one of the pages of Picture a
Tree (2 min), and discuss what that tree looked like, and the many layers of plasticine it
took to make that page.

Activity 3: 10 min

Have students come to the windows to look outside at some trees, and discuss what they
see. Are there any leaves on the trees? What are on the trees?
Explain that before they make their plasticine picture, they need to plan what they want it
to look like, so they should look really closely at the trees, so they can make a good plan
of what they are going to do.
Have students sit down at the tables, where they put their stuff down (move students if
necessary).

Activity 4: 10 min

Tell students to write their name on their paper.

Draw an example of a quick sketch of what they might draw on their papers, on the
whiteboard, while paper passers pass out papers.
Have students begin to draw what their spring tree is going to look like, and plan out what
colours they want to use.

Sponge Activity:

Show the videos of making different trees on barbarareid.ca, starting with the video about
the spring tree (4 min), then the summer tree (4 min), and finally the fall tree (4 min),
pointing out how she made things, and how she did the backgrounds.
Have students start on plasticine backgrounds.

Closing: 5 min

Explain that we will work on the plasticine part next week.

Have students line up, and have paper passer collect papers.
Go back to classroom for perogies!

Thursday April 14, 10:15-11:45

Procedure:

Before class:

Pull out plasticine, and cardboard boards

Bring papers from last week
Remind students to bring pencils, erasers and sharpeners

Introduction: 5 min

Remind students that we are making plasticine spring tree pictures.

Bring up the spring tree example again, and explain that Picture a Tree will be up at the
front if anyone wants to look at it. You cannot bring it anywhere though.

Body: 80 min

Activity 1: 15 min

If we didnt do it last week, show the videos of making different trees on barbarareid.ca,
starting with the video about the spring tree (4 min), then the summer tree (4 min), and
finally the fall tree (4 min), pointing out how she made things, and how she did the
backgrounds.
Explain that they should warm up the plasticine in their hands a bit, to soften it if its too
hard. Also show them how to mix colours, but explain that they should only mix a little bit
at a time, because we dont want to waste plasticine if they make more than they need.
When you add a dark colour, a little goes a long way.

Activity 2: 10 min

Allow time for students to finish planning out their picture

Explain that I need to okay their picture before they can get to work with the plasticine, and
that they need their backgrounds okayed before they can work on the tree (write that on
the board).

Activity 3: 55 min

When students have their plans okayed, they can start on their backgrounds.
When backgrounds are finished, they can get started on their trees.
Have students put their pictures in plastic bags, and tape down the tops of the bags to the
back of the pictures. Then they can go in the bucket.

Sponge Activity:

Clean up
Draw a spring picture on the back of their plan

Closing: 5 min

Have students line up, and supplies person carry the pictures back.
