Buddhism Beliefs

By Lydia Hall and Euneece Hong

The Four Noble Truths

First // Suffering
-

associated with suffering

Caused by old age, sickness, and

death

Deeper sense: about temporary

pleasure.

So even when not physically suffering,

we still suffer from dissatisfaction and
unfulfillment

Buddhists find it neither pessimistic

nor optimistic, but realistic.

Second // Origin of Suffering

- Root of all suffering is desire: Tanha
Term in pali with a negative
connotation because buddhists believe
there can be positive desires.
- Three roots of evil, three fires, three
poisons
- Comes in three forms:
- Greed and desire. Rooster
- Ignorance or delusion. Pig
- Hatred and destructive urges. Snake
- Fire sermon // All sensed
are burning with lust,
greed, hate, etc.

Fourth // Eightfold path

1. Right Understanding
2. Right Intention
3. Right Speech
4. Right Action
Third // Possible end to suffering
- Liberation; To free yourself from the cycle
of suffering

5. Right Livelihood
6. Right Effort
7. Right Mindfulness

- Nirvana means to extinguish. Extinguish

the three fires

8. Right Concentration

- State of profound spiritual joy, without

negative emotions and fear

-. Path to enlightenment, cessation of

suffering, once reached, can leave the
stages behind.

- Filled with compassion

The Wheel of
Life
The Wheel of Life is also called the
Wheel of Becoming. The Buddhist
teachings were drawn out by the
Buddha himself to further explain his
teachings to common people. The
goal for the wheel is to focus your light
energy to become one with the
Brahman.

Similarities
All beings want to be happy; they want to avoid
pain and suffering
- Dalai Lama
- Jesus and Buddha are good teachers and
friends
-

they show us the way but it is up to us to

be happy and end suffering

(A former christian and now a buddhist)

Differences
- Confidence
-

Buddhism: It is up to us; we have power.

Christianity: have the attitude of a little

child : be dependent

- Commitment
-

Christianity: Hard to commit; lustful

thought is the same as committing
adultery.

Buddhism is an easier, alternative

View on Jesus:
- Is human
- Conveys spiritual truth through images
- Mission: re-open the Way to eternal life
- Ministry: short and eventful
- Good teachings. Some similar to Buddhist
teachings.
- His crucifixion on the cross shows patient
endurance

Karma
Karma is the evaluation of
ones deeds that will affect
their future. If you live a life in
light and good thoughts, then
you will be rewarded with good
fortune. If you live in darkness
and do bad things, you will be
punished.

The Buddhist Universe

The Realms
1. Heaven: home of
gods
2. Realm of Humanity:
greatest chance of
Enlightenment
3. Realm of Titans
4. Realm of Hungry
Ghosts
5. Animal Realm
6. Hell Realms: not
eternal; until bad

Origin of the Universe

Buddhism has no real origin
Everything and everyone depends on
everything and everyone else. Cause
and Effect
The early stages of Buddhism was
represented by water.
Dependent Origination is the physical
world including the suffering and
imperfections. There are 12 stages
that go along with Dependent
Origination.
