Describe the context in which these artifacts were collected and identify the standard and
competency(s) the artifact represents.
In the GEDU549 Career Development and Assessment course I was able to demonstrate my
competencies and standards for Standard 10 of the Iowa State Board examiners licensure
requirements. In the Career Unit I was able to demonstrate my ability to create lesson plans
which include objectives, learning activities and discussion questions that are developmentally
appropriate and engage students in the learning process.
What do they demonstrate to you about your learning and mastery of the competencies
which fall under this standard?
My artifact demonstrates my ability to create curriculum for a large group setting in order to
motivate students in their career development. In this artifact each lesson has a learning
objective, activities geared towards learning and take home tasks. The curriculum is formatted
so another counselor or teacher could easily identify what the objectives are and how students
were able to apply the concepts in their career development.
What do these items of evidence tell you about your overall progress toward your personal
goals and your growth as a professional school counselor?
This artifact shows my competency is creating curriculum if it is needed within my school.
This has facilitated my journey towards becoming a school counselor because I am now
confident in my ability to create effective curriculum if there is none available and to share this
curriculum with other counselors.
What are your plans for additional growth or improvement in this area?
Creating curriculum is something I will continue to work on and look for professional
development opportunities. Although I feel confident in my ability to create effective curriculum
I know this is an area I can continue to grow. I feel I can do this by developing career units for
the middle school and elementary level if I am placed there as a school counselor. There is also
opportunity for growth if I join my schools PBIS team which creates school-wide lessons on
appropriate behavior expectations.
