Grade Level: 1st Grade CC.1.2.1.B As and answer questions about key details in a text. First grade students will be able to determine the describing words that describe how many in sentences given to them. Post-It notes, sentence strip packs with words on the sentence strips that make up a sentence, Teacher will ask students to remember what types of describing words we have been discussing in past weeks Possible answers: words that describe color, shape, size, sound, feel, touch, and smell 1) Teacher will explain and model different describing words that describe how many on the white board. 2) Teacher will pass out Post-It notes and ask students to write some words they think might be describing words that describe how many on the Post-It notes and place Post-It notes on the board. 3) Teacher and students will review describing words written on Post-It notes by writing correct answers on the board for all students to see. 4) Teacher will provide more explanation and examples if needed. 5) Teacher will then dictate sentences with describing words that describe how many. Students will be required to hold up the correct amount of fingers of the describing word in the sentence. Example: For the sentence, She ate one cookie, students would hold up one finger. 6) Student table groups will complete the assessment activity. Activity will have each table group receiving a pack of sentence strips, each sentence strip containing one word to a sentence. Students will be required to figure out the order of the sentence and then determine what word is the describing word that describes how many in a sentence. 7) Teacher will walk around and observe students to determine if they understand the concept. Teacher and students will review sentence strip activity by having students read their sentence sentences out loud and divulging the describing word that describes how many in the sentence.
Assessment
instead of writing it on a Post-It note, students will be allowed
to hold up their describing word sentence strip while saying it instead of just saying the describing word on the sentence strip Students will be informally assessed on their ability to find the describing words in the sentences. An individual activity and formal assessment will take place the following day to ensure students completely understood material being taught. Remediation will be provided, if needed.
