ChildMaltreatment
Toomanychildrenarevictimsofmaltreatmentthisisaworldwideoccurrence.Some
reportsestimatethatabout14%ofchildren,oronechildinseven,sufferfrommaltreatment.
Neglect,physicalabuse,emotionalabuse,andsexualabuseareallformsofchildmaltreatment.
Thetypesarealsomosttoleastprevalentinthatorder.Maltreatmentisshowntonegatively
affectchildrensmental,physical,andemotionalhealth.Thesenegativeeffectsarealsoshownto
persistintoadulthood.
IntheUnitedStates,ChildProtectiveServicesconfirmedover600,000casesofchild
maltreatmentin2011and2012.Thecurrentratesarenotlikelytohavechanged.Thisnumber
seemslikealot,butitisnotthewholepicture.Manychildhoodcasesofabusegoonunnoticed
orunreported.Manycasesprobablygounreportedbecausethepeoplethatabusethechildare
commonlyfamilymembers.Fouroutoffivetimes,oneorbothparentsareresponsiblefor
harmingthechild.Nonparentfamilymembersarethenextmostlikelyperpetrators.Veryrarely
arenonfamilymembersresponsibleforabuse,butthesecasesaretheoneswehearaboutmost
often.Thesaddestthingaboutthesestatisticsisthatthepeoplechildrenaresupposedtobeable
todependonthemostarethepeoplethataremostlikelytohurtthem.

Notallchildrenareequallylikelytobevictimsofmaltreatment.Infantsundertheageof
oneareintheagegroupmostlikelytosufferfromabuseorneglect.Theolderchildrenget,the
lesslikelytheyaretobeharmed.Genderalsoinfluencesachildschancesofbeingabusedgirls
haveaslightlyhigherriskthanboys.Raceisanotherfactorthatpredictsratesofmaltreatmentin
theUnitedStates.AfricanAmericanchildrenaremostlikelytobeharmedandAsianchildren
areleastlikely.Thefamilyssocioeconomicstatusisalsoanindicator.Higherratesofchild
abuseandneglectareprevalentinlowSESfamilies.
Thenegativelongtermeffectsofchildmaltreatmentarewhyitissuchanissue.The
physicaleffectsofmaltreatmentincludeimpairedbraingrowthandpoorphysicalhealth.People
abusedaschildrenareathigherrisksfordiseasesandobesity.Theabnormalbraindevelopment
lowerstheindividualslevelsofcognitionandandraisesthelikelihoodofmentaldisorders.
Psychologicalproblemsarisefromtheimpaireddevelopmentofthebrainandtheemotional
traumathataccompaniesmaltreatment.Lowselfesteem,depression,anxiety,anddrugabuseare
justsomeofthenegativeeffects.Physicalandmentalhealthproblemsarenotoriousforcreating
economicproblemstheeffectsofchildabuseandneglectarenoexception.
$124billionistheamountestimatedthattheUSlosesperyearduetotheeffectsofchild
maltreatment.Thepreviouslymentionedhigherratesofdiseaseattributetohighmedicalcosts.
WithmanyvictimsofchildabusebeingfromlowSESbackgrounds,thismeansthatmostcannot
affordtopayforthemedicaltreatmenttheyreceive.Impairedbrainfunctioningresultsinlosses
toproductivity,whichalsoattributesthethe$124billion.Anotherfactoristhecostlycriminal
justicesystem.Individualswhosufferedchildhoodabusehavehigherratesofcriminalactivity.

Childmaltreatmentisobviouslyasad,expensive,frequentoccurrenceinoursociety.
Educationonthematterandpreventionneedtobeimplementedonalargerscale.Parentswith
childreninthehigherriskcategoriesshouldreceivethegreatestamountofattention.Ithinkthe
mosteffectivewaytotreatthisproblemisearlychildhoodeducationthatisstatefunded.This
wouldhelpkeeptheyoungerchildren,whoaremostatrisk,inasaferenvironmentwherethey
willdefinitelybenurturedandnotharmed.Also,duetodisproportionateamountsoflowSES
childrenbeingvictimsofabuseandstartingschoolbehind,thispublicpreschoolshouldbefocus
onlowerincomeneighborhoods.Furthermore,highschoolsshouldhaveclassesonchildrearing
thatwillhelpeducateonthedangersaboutchildmaltreatment.Hopefullythesemeasurescould
lowerincidencesonanationallevel.
