RATIONALE:

SamarandLeytefarmersrelyheavilyoncoconutpalmsastheirsourceofincome,coconutsbeing
theirprincipalagriculturalcrop.TheonslaughtofsuperTyphoonHaiyan(TyphoonYolanda)onNovember
8, 2013, however, heavily damaged their coconut stands and some 15 million coconut palms were
reportedtobebeyondrehabilitation(survival).Asaconsequence,incomeofthesecoconutfarmerswere
drastically reduced. To help alleviate the plight of these Typhoon Haiyan (Typhoon Yolanda) victims,
herculeaneffortswereexertedbythePhilippineCoconutAuthority(PCA)andtwoUnitedNations(UN)
agenciestheFoodandAgricultureOrganization(FAO)andtheUnitedNationsDevelopmentProgramme
(UNDP) and with the help of various Local Government Units (LGUs) and local and international
organizations to help retrieve and utilize these huge volume of coconut wood (cocowood) and other
debrisprocessthemintoproductsofcommercialvalueforthebenefitofaffectedcoconutfarmersandto
helpthemprepareforsubsequentcoconutreplanting.
MostofthelumberprocessedfromretrievedcoconuttrunksweresoldtomajorcitieslikeManila
andCebuandneighboringprovinceswhiletherestwereusedasbuildingconstructionmaterialsbylocal
population.Unfortunately,aswiththepast,cocowoodwereusedonlyasscaffoldingsandformlumber
duringconstructionofbigbuildingsandasmainmaterialsinlowcosthousesinSamarandLeyte.The
opportunitytousetheseverygoodlumberforhighervalueproductslikepanelings,engineeredflooring,
structuralbuildingcomponents,andfurniturewerelostasmostpeoplewereunawareofcoconutwoods
potentials.
It is for this reason that PCA is planning to highlight coconut woods potentials by way of
constructingacoconutwoodmodelhouse(CoconutHouse).TheproposedCoconutHousewillserveasa
demonstrationoftheutilityofcoconutwoodinstructuralandaestheticapplications.Itwilllikewiseserve
asmainvenueformeetings,conferences,skillstrainings,guesthouse,asaresourcemecca(library)forall
coconut farming and utilization technologies, and as a show window (promotional display area) for
coconutfoodandnonfood(furniture,handicrafts,etc.)products.

THECOCOHOUSEDESIGN

CocoHousewillusecoconutwoodasoneofthebuildingcomponents.Cocowood,togetherwith
cement,glass,andsteel,willbeincorporatedinthedesigntocreateatyphoonresistantbuilding.The
interiorwillbecomplementedwithcocowoodandothercoconutbiomassproducts.
