This artifact is an art lesson plan that incorporates social studies and geography.

This
artifact portrays my ability to create a lesson plan that integrates several subject areas. I created
this lesson for the art methods education course. For this assignment, I was given the freedom to
create any lesson plan I wanted, the only requirement was either visual arts or dramatic arts had
be incorporate into the lesson. This was a new concept for me because this was my first time
creating a lesson play based on an art project. I worked individually on this project.
I am very proud of the lesson plan I created. I think this would be a great lesson for 5th
graders or middle school students. Upper elementary and middle grades are the ideal levels I
want to teach. Therefore, I am very excited to incorporate this lesson plan into the classroom.
This lesson exemplified my ability to create a lesson because it covers state standards, national
standards, objectives, checks for understanding during and after the lesson, and it has
modifications if needed.
Creating a lesson plan that covers several subject areas and meeting multiple state
standards is crucial for a teacher. Since there are so many state standards that a teacher must meet
through different lessons in each school year, experiences like this are great practice for me. I
was also able to learn the process of meeting each required portion of a lesson plan.
If I had to do this over again, I would choose to focus this lesson plan for 4th or 5th
graders. This lesson plan was directed for a middle school social studies classroom; however, I
think it would be more beneficial in the future to have a similar lesson for lower grade levels. If I
changed the focus grade level, I would also change the focus from Latin America, to the United
States of America.

Overall, this was great practice creating a lesson plan meeting specific learning goals.
This is a skill I will use for the remainder of my teaching career. Integration of subjects is
beneficial for students, because it make learning enjoyable for the students. I participated in the
lesson as a student creating the flag, and researching facts about the United States of America. I
realized that this was such a fun a way to learn, what can be, a rather dull subject. Therefore, I
firsthand understand the importance of creating a fun learning environment. Integration art into
other subjects is a great solution for making dull subjects more enjoyable. To conclude, this
lesson plan has provided me with the skills needed to create a lesson, while integrating several
subject areas into that lesson.
