Lunch Duty 8th Grade: During lunch duty the grade level administrator is
present to watch and handle discipline issues. My role is to actively monitor and to
eliminate behavior issues. Our goal is to have a smooth and orderly process where
students enter, get in a line, get their food and then sit at the appropriate table. My role is
to help ensure this plan. The way to do it is actively monitoring and making sure students
are quickly going through the line and sitting down. If a problem arises, we have a table
that is manned by one of the coaches, where the students will finish their lunch. During
this particular week, there were minimal behavior issues. I believe the reason is because
the procedures are in place and we have everyone actively monitoring. Through all three
weeks, we had very minimal behavior issues. We did have a group of girls that tended to
be loud and give a few of the coaches a hard time, but I gave them multiple chances and
then decided to switch two of their schedules so they would not be in the same lunch
problem fixed!

STEM Formation/ Discovery Education: As stated in standard 5, our vision is
to bring in to systems that improve the quality of instruction our students are already
receiving. I attended a training from Discovery Education on implementing STEM in our
curriculum. We are one of three middle schools in our district that have been given a
grant to implement STEM formation on our campus. I am one of four that will be in
charge of the organizing and implementation of this program. I have to attend 6 hour
trainings on Saturdays that will help teach us STEM activities and how to incorporate
them into multiple subjects. This will improve the instruction because the goal of STEM
is to show students how all the different subjects go together. Its easy to for students to
see there can be a correlation between math and science, but they might not realize there
is one between math and art. It is my goal to come up with lessons that teachers can use
that students will be able to see the correlation.

Campus Improvement Team: As a member of the campus improvement team,
our goal is to look at prior data and see what changes we need to make to improve the
student learning. During this meeting, we looked at previous STAAR and MAP data to
insure the correct students were placed in classes like math lab that would help them with
their math skills. Looking at the data and making sure we are targeting all students and
are giving them opportunities to have the best education should be our main goals as
educators.

Six Weeks to Success/ Organization: One of the systems we have in place at
our school is rewarding students for behavior and academic success. Each six weeks we
pick a strategy to recognize those students that are being successful. This six weeks was

organization. If on a regular basis students were bring their binder and writing the
objective in their planner, we rewarded them with a certificate and a treat. I put this in
standard 1 because the goal of this system is to reward positive behavior (organizational
skills). Being organized is a necessary skill for students to learn. Its amazing the things
they will do in order to get recognized and receive a treat. If a bag of chips and their
name called over the loud speaker works, then I believe this is a good system to
continue to encourage positive behavior and AVID strategies.

Wow Me Wednesday/ Polite and Positive Attitudes: Another one of our
procedures on our campus is the 5 Ps: Positive, Punctual, Prepared, Polite and Positive.
In order to reinforce these in a positive manner, we began Wow Me Wednesdays. Each
week we would choose one of the Ps. The first one was Polite. Each teacher had two
cards and they were to recognize two students in their class that were being Polite. We
have decided to do this every week because of the increase in positive behavior. Students
were purposely trying to do things so they could get selected for the Wow Me
Wednesday. I placed this in standard 5 because it is a great system that has been started
that encourages positive behavior. When you start eliminating some of the behavior
issues, there is more time for learning to take place.

ways to integrate the STEM activities into the specific subject areas. It was more of a
hands on approach in which the teachers left with activities they can utilize in their
classrooms.

STEM Formation/ District Celebration: The administration as well as
innovators were invited to a celebration put on by Discovery Education. The purpose of
the celebration was to recognize the middle schools that were implementing the new
STEM curriculum. Our school has been working hard to implement the STEM culture,
so it was exciting to be able to share all the exciting activities and lessons that had been
occurring at our school. In fact, we had not realized the quantity as well as the quality of
lessons that were going on until our principal began sharing all that she had been seeing
at our school.

STEM Formation/ Discovery Education: My project for my practicum was to
create and implement a STEM class on our campus. I have utilized the trainings of
discovery education to help achieve this goal. Although our campus was selected to be a
STEM campus, I wanted to take it a step further. I am utilizing these trainings to find
ideas to implement lessons in my newly created STEM class. If this class is successful, it
will emphasize the importance of creating a STEM culture on our campus.
