familyvacation.IwantyoutobeawarethattheAbingtonSchoolDistrictdoesnot
recognizefamilytripsasanexcusedabsence,regardlessoftheactivitiesinvolvedin
thetrip.Theschooldistrictisnotinthepositionofoverseeingfamilyvacationsor
evaluatingtheeducationalnatureofafamilytrip.Thedatesthatyourchildrenwere
absentwererecordedasunexcused.Anaccumulationofunexcusedabsencescan
resultinareferraltoourattendanceofficerandasubsequentnoticeofaviolationof
thecompulsoryschoolattendancelaw."
Mr.Rossiservedahotcupofteaback,validatingwhyhetookhischildrenwithhim
andexplainedhowheturnedthe"vacation"intoafieldtripthatallowedthemtowalk
throughhistoricalplacestheirclassmateshaveyettolearnabout.Plus,heallowed
themtowitnesstheresilienceof#BostonStrong.
Afterlearningthatthemainpurposeofthetriphadtodowiththedeathofaloved
one,itsortofmademewonderifthepersonwhodraftedtheletterdoesntconsider
compassionatedaysforkidsalso.
But,withonemonthleftintheschoolyear,JackandVictoriahaveearnedsomuch
morethanagradetheyveearnedbraggingrightsforhavingafatherwhohas
lessonsthatarefarfromtheconfinesofaclassroom#ParentOfTheYear!

DearMadamPrincipal,
WhileIappreciateyourconcernforourchildren'seducation,Icanpromiseyouthey
learnedasmuchinthefivedayswewereinBostonastheywouldinanentireyearin
school.
Ourchildrenhadaonceinalifetimeexperience,onethatcan'tbeduplicatedina
classroomorreadinabook.
Inthe3daysofschooltheymissed(whichconsistedofstandardizedtestingthatthey
couldtakeanytime)theylearnedaboutdedication,commitment,love,perseverance,
overcomingadversity,civicpride,patriotism,Americanhistoryculinaryartsand
physicaleducation.
Theywatchedtheirfatherovercome,injury,badweather,thedeathofalovedone
andmanyotherobstaclestoachieveanimportantpersonalgoal.
Theyalsoexperiencedfirsthandtheloveandsupportofthousandsofothers
cheeringonpeoplewithacommongoal.
Atthemarathon,theywatchedblindrunners,runnerswithprostheticlimbsand
debilitatingdiseasesandpeoplerunningtoraisemoneyforgreatcausesruninthe
mostprestigiousandhistoricmarathonintheworld.
Theyalsopaidtributetothevictimsofasenselessactofterrorismandlearnedthat
nomatterwhatevilmayoccur,terroristscannotdetertheAmericanspirit.
Thesearethingstheywon'tevertrulylearnintheclassroom.
InadditionourchildrenwalkedtheFreedomTrail,visitedthesiteoftheBostonTea
Party,theBostonMassacreandthegravesofseveralsignersoftheDeclarationof
Independence.
ThesearethingstheyWILLlearninschoolayearormorefromnow.Soinactuality
ourchildrenareaheadofthegame.
Theyalsovisitedanaquarium,sampledgreatcuisineandspentmanyhoursof
physicalactivitywalkingandswimming

Bythemid1880s,theUnitedStateswasthewealthiestnationintheworld.Butitwasstillwith
Europewheretherealinternationalpoliticalpowerlay.Mostofuslearnedtheterm
laissezfaire
in
highschoolandlearnedtoapplyittoBelleEpoqueAmerica.Butthesituationwasabitmore
complicatedthanthat.Itwasntsomuchthatthegovernmentleftbusinessalone,itwasthatthe
governmentwasweakingeneralbothintheinternationaldiplomaticsphereandinitsown
backyard.Andduetothisanddespiteitswealth,theU.S.hadlittleswaywithothergovernments
(Zakaria,
FromWealthtoPower
).
Inanycase,withoutwealth,norichAmerica.Withoutstronggovernment,nostrongAmerica.And,
nothingcanbeaccomplishedwithouteither.In1900,theU.S.hadtheformerinspades.Itwas
duringtheProgressiveErathatitbuiltthelatter.
Disinterestedand/orweak?
TheeconomicsituationintheU.S.reflectedthismoneyrich,powerpoorstate.Thoughtheexact
amountisunknown,itisestimatedthatover45%oftheU.S.wealthwasheldbythetop1%,a
highinU.S.history,andnottoberivaledagainuntilthelast20years.Thegapbetweenrichand
poorwastremendous,makingademocracyratherineffective.
Beingamemberoftheincrediblyshrinkingmiddleclasswasperilous.Despiteourvisionof1900
America,withitssmall,traditional,stablemiddleclassfamiliesgatheredaroundtheparlortable,
attendingchurch,andcallingonfriendsfortea,theprofessionalmiddleclasswasinconstantsiege.
Wageswereuneven,unreliable,andmembersoftheprofessionalmiddleclasswouldemulatetheir
bettersbyemployingmonopolisticstrategiestobuildingpracticesandbusinesses.Thenoble,
idealisticmiddleclassmanwhostruggledforhonorandvirtueamidstthesmuttheHoratioAlger
wasnotreallyaviablemodelforbehaviorinsuchacutthroatenvironment.Buttheprogressive
movementdidwhatitcouldtoturnhimintoadeity.
