Cloned SPM Question (Paper 1)

Round off 60 473 correct to three significant figures.

A 60 470 C 60 400
B 60 500 D 60 000

Solution
The fourth significant figure is 7 which is > 5.
Thus, 1 is added to the third significant figure, and all the figures after the third significant figure
are changed to zeroes.
Hence, 60 473 = 60 500 (correct to three significant figures)

Answer: B

Pointers
• A scientific calculator can be used to answer this question also.
• Set the calculator to Sci mode with 3 significant figures.
• Key in 60473, followed by the = button. 6.05 × 104 will appear. Then write this as
a single number. The answer is 60 500.

Cloned SPM Question (Paper 1)

Express 628 000 in the standard form.

A 6.28 × 103 C 6.28 × 10−3
B 6.28 × 105 D 6.28 × 10−5

Solution
The decimal point is shifted
6 2 8 0 0 0 = 6.28 × 105
5 places to the left. So it is 105.
Answer: B
Pointers
• A scientific calculator can be used to answer this question also.

0.0102 − 3 × 10 −4 =
A 9.9 × 10−3 C 1.017 × 10−3
B 9.9 × 10−4 D 1.017 × 10−4

Solution
0.0102 − 3 × 10 −4 = 0.0102 − 0.0003
= 0.0099
= 9.9 × 10−3

Answer: A

Pointers
• Write 3 × 10−4 as a single number.
• After subtraction, write the answer in the standard form.

Cloned SPM Question (Paper 1)

A rectangular floor has a width of 3 200 cm and a length of 4 500 cm. The floor is to be covered
with square tiles with sides of 30 cm. Calculate the number of tiles required to cover the whole
floor.
A 1.2 × 104 C 1.2 × 105
B 1.6 × 104 D 1.6 × 105

Solution
Area of the floor = (3 200 × 4 500) cm2
Area of each tile = (30 × 30) cm2
3 200 × 4 500
Number of tiles required =
30 × 30
= 16 000
= 1.6 × 104

Answer: B
Pointers
• The number of tiles can be found by dividing the area of the floor by the area of a tile.
