Procedure
1. Students are gathered on the rug. Teacher refers to the I CAN statements
under Social Studies to focus students on the essential understandings for
Ancient China.
2. Ask students to raise their hands and tell you some things they now know
about the Great Wall of China. Tell them 6 students who are sitting
appropriately and raising their hands will be called on. Remind them that
they can use the Accountable Talk posters above the number line to help
them in conversation.
3. Pass out the paper books or pamphlets: The Great Wall of China, a story by
Fiona Reynoldson and Jane Shuter. Children may share the reading with a
buddy as the short booklet is read for review using the Lumens lamp and
Promethean board.
4. When the book is finished, ask if anyone learned a new fact. If so, what was
it? This should be very short.
5. Have students pass in these paper books in a stack.
6. Stand quickly, take a shake and walk to seats for the next instructions.
7. Now the class will be building a piece of the Great Wall. Each student will
have a template (show piece) to look at, color, and tape together as a
cooperative table group. Students will need to decide how their section will
be colored so their section will be similar. Remember that the 4,000 miles of
the Great Wall were built at different times and under the rule of different
Emperors.

8. After each group decides on color(s), they will cut their pieces out.
9. Then students will need to work together to tape their pieces together
without wasting the Emperors masking tape.
10.We will want to build a CLASS wall in this room.
11.WHERE can we tape a wall in this class? Everyone looks around
12.Lead them to think of/conclude that the cubby wall would work from end to
end, but starting under the computer table. Remember the builders of the
Great Wall had to work in the mountains and that the Wall zigged and zagged
across Northern China.
13.OKhere are your sections. Work together as a group and lets get this
GREAT WALL colored, taped together as a table section, and then taped as a
class Great Wall with my help.

Closing
Discussion: How did you work together as a team?
Were there Hogs or Logs? What could you do better next time?
Praises for working on a class project! You are great HUMAN RESOURCES who
worked together to create a CAPITAL RESOURCE. Remember that parts of the
GREAT WALL are still standing today and that many thousands of visitors walk parts
of the GREAT WALL each year. The visitors pay the Chinese Government to walk the
Wall, so that gives China money to spend on things that country needs!
Clean up. Desk tops cleared. Praise following directions promptly.
Line up as teacher calls students to walk to PE at 12:05.
