Student have basic knowledge of subtraction and addition.

Lesson Objectives
Assessment Guidelines

3-part measurable objective

(include scoring key, rubric, etc.)

Students will be able to solve subtraction word problems using objects as a visual aid.

Students create their own word

problem/stories.

Instructional Procedures (identify steps in sequential order)

Differentiation
( including IEP goals being addressed)

A. Engage and Explore

Start out the lesson with a Problem of the Day. Have it written on the board and tell students to try
the problem by themselves. Read through the problem with the students (pointing at each word.)
Students will also have the piece of paper with the problem written on it as well.
Jenny has 6 pieces of cake. She gave 2 of them two her friends. How much cake does Jenny
have left?
The problem is set up with some structure to organize students thinking. Tell them they can use
the manipulatives that are on their table, or they can draw pictures to help solve the problem.
Since this in a whole group, have one student come up and work on the problem on the document
camera to show the entire class what is going on. Remind students to check their work when they
are finished and have the class tell if they agree or disagree by showing a thumbs up or thumbs
down. Students are also given the opportunity to share why they agree or disagree.

Johnny will receive a separate

problem of 5 -2. Instead of
Jenny having 6 pieces of cake
she will have 5. He will work
with the Intervention specialist
in the back.

B. Explain and Discuss

Continue this lesson by handing out an ocean mat to each student (attached to lesson) and
having them take it back to their seat. Put one on the document camera so that it can be modeled
for students to see. The students are also given a train of ten counting cubes. Tell the students
they need to go back to their seats, separate the cubes lay them next to their mat, and when they

are finished put their hand on their head so we can start the lesson. Then tell students this:
Today I am going to tell you some stories. Each story ends with a question. We are going to use
the cubes to answer the question at the end of each story. Stories like this include math problems
are called word problems. While I tell you the story, use the cubes to show what is happening in
the story. There are different then the word problems we have been working on because in each
story something is going to get taken away.
Say the following problems out loud. As you say them, model on my mat using the cubes and
have the students model it on their matt as well. Ask a student to orally give me the answer by
raising their hand. We do not write down anything in todays lesson. Have the students focus on
listening to the problems and using the cubes to solve the answer. Here are the problems:
1. Three fish were swimming in the ocean. Two fish swam away. How many fish are left?
2. There are five starfish sitting on the sand. One gets picked up by a diver. How many starfish
are still sitting on the sand?
3. Seven people go diving in the ocean to look for treasure. Five go back to the boat. How many
divers are still looking for treasure?
4. Eight mermaids are swimming in the ocean. Two go up to the surface. How many mermaids
are left?
5. Ten little fish are swimming. Three fish get gobbled up by a big fish. How many fish there
now?
C. Closure
To close the lesson, I will have two students create their own subtraction problem and show the
class their work on the smart board. Then after that I will review what we did as the whole class
lesson.

Today we learned about solving problems that come from a story. These are called word
problems. Tomorrow we will be continuing to work on word problems, but we are going to start
writing the answer to the problems."
