7 Things Students Want to Know

1. Am I in the right room? I would address this question by standing
at the doorway of the classroom welcoming my new students into our
classroom. Once students were seated, I would introduce myself and
take attendance to ensure they are in the right classroom. I would also
have my name written on the board along with their names on our
attendance calendar.
2. Where am I supposed to sit? I would initially have my students
sit in assigned seating. On the first day as they are walking in, I would
gesture them to find their nameplate and have a seat.
3. What are the rules of the classroom? I would go over rules and
procedures following attendance. I would go over them orally, explain
why we have rules, have them displayed on the wall, inquire if they
think we should add more rules, and have them sign and date the rules
and procedures document I hand out to them in class. This is to keep
them accountable for their behavior.
4. What will I be doing this year? I will discuss procedures and
rules together. Students will know the concept of give me five when I
would like their attention. Once they hear the line up and clean up
song they will know to do this task in an orderly fashion, they will know
how to behave and follow directions during center time. Students will
know to rise up their hand to answer a question or ask a question.
Students will know how to complete assignments following procedures.
This should take me 2 weeks to go over and enforce in my classroom.
5. How will I be graded? I will touch on grades very little on the first
day of school. I would most likely stress the importance of completing
assignments on time and to stay on task while they are completing
their assignment(s). I would explain in detail once I assign the first
graded assignment.
6. Who is the teacher as a person? I would most likely make a mini
personal collage with pictures. I would go over it in a group circle with
a pointer. I would later display it around my desk area and most likely
use it as an example for their very own all about me assignment.
7. Will the teacher treat me as a human being? I would most
definitely treat my students as human beings. I would talk with them in
an appropriate manner along with redirecting them in an appropriate
manner. I would encourage them to do be the best they can be, greet

them in the morning with a smile, ask them how their morning/day is
going; I would dress appropriately, and treat them like they were my
own. In our classroom we are a family and classroom community
working together to reach our full potential.
