Positive Beats are Best!

Target Behavior- Negative statements made by students about themselves, class work, assignments or
topic of study. When students in class start class, receive an assignment, begin a new topic or unit of
study they can engage in negative statements. Negative statements are typically about the students
ability level, assignment, or topic of study. Students who engage in negative statements about
themselves, unit of study, or assignment are setting themselves up for decreased academic success
because of self-fulfilling prophecy. Possible negative statements could be, but are not limited to: This is
dumb, I cant do ________, I hate_________, I dont want to do this This sucks!
Replacement Behavior- When class begins, an assignment is given, a new unit of study or topic is
introduced students will make positive statements about the class activity.

Immediate R+- Each time a student makes a positive statement in class a tally mark will be placed by the
students name on a printed copy of the seating chart. The student will receive a musical note to place
on the board at the end of class.
Ongoing R+- Students who received musical notes for positive statements will be able to place them on
the board at the end of class. Once the class has reached 100 positive beats then the class will be able to

Teaching the Desired Behavior- Making Positive Statements

Prior to the lesson, I will keep track of the number of positive and negative statements that students make
prior to introduction of the Positive Beats are Best plan. This data will be used to explain why this is a
needed behavior change for the class.
1. Introduce the differences between positive statements and negative statements with the whole
class.
2. Identifying Positive and Negative Statements- Hand out each student a notecard, on one side of
the card the students will write the word positive, on the other side of the card they will write
negative.
3. One the overhead, I will project some statements that are positive and negative about topics of
study, classwork, assignments, or negative self-statements. The students will
4. Model by think aloud to the class the number and variety of positive statements that can be made
for some real world situations an adult may encounter: given an assignment, task from a boss, a
challenge, or difficult situation. Make a list of all the possible positive statements that can be
made from these situations.
5. Practice making positive statements about student situations- Break students into 6 groups
6. Give each group a Classroom Situation
7. Ask each group to develop a positive statement about the given class situation.
8. I will monitor groups, and provide feedback about the positive statements.
9. For an exit ticket, each student will need to write down a positive statement about class, and the
BCP.
Teach the Plan- Positive Beats are Best!
1. After the mini-lesson on making positive statement, introduce the BCP
2. Present the bulletin board to student with the beat box, and the music notes.
3. Explain to the class that for each positive statement a student makes during the next three week,
he or she will receive a music note to place on the board.
4. Once the class reached 100 music notes on the board, then they will be able to participate in class
Hip Hop Production Studio day. Where they will create an original hip hop song, choreograph a
video, dance in the video, direct the video and film the video.
5. Remind student at the beginning of each class period of the ongoing behavior plan, and the
recording of positive statements and handing out of music notes to students who make positive
statements.
Options- The bulletin board will have the beat box in the middle, and six separate pages to represent
each class. The music notes will be added to each specific class period page, so that all cases are
represented.
Materials- Access to video camera, or device with video capability, props for video, space for
rehearsal (outside if weather is good, gym if not being used),
