The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by
drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as
well as knowledge of learners and the community context.
Rationale:
To document my understanding of standard #7, Planning for Instruction; I selected to include my
KISS Thinking + Lesson Plan. This unit shows my ability to plan teaching instruction that

RESOURCES NEEDED:
Book: Way Out in the Desert, Cutouts of horned toads, hummingbirds, javelinas, rattlesnakes,
gila monsters, road runners, jack rabbits, scorpions, coyotes, tarantulas. Papers, Pencils for each
group of two
DIRECTIONS:

Read and discuss the book- Way Out in the Desert. After reading the book, discuss the
animals in the book. Talk about how the amount of animals and their babies grow in
number.
Pass out a set of manipulatives, paper and pencils to each group of two.
Have students count their animals. When they know the total, have them raise their hand.
Have the children then separate each breed of animal into their own group. Then write on
their paper how many of each specific animal there is. Have them try to write the word
associated with the number.
Have the students practice adding and taking away one animal from one group to another
and recounting the groups. Aid student when necessary. Allow 10 to 20 minutes for this
activity.
PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT:
To assess students comprehension of the story Way Out in the Desert, have students
write down three important things that they remember or learned from the story. Student
will be graded on whether they accurately name three things from the story and can
accurately label at least half of the animals mentioned in the story. Five animals named
they will receive an S for satisfactory achievement as an evaluative grade anything
below this scores will receive a U for unsatisfactory achievement as an evaluative
grade.
To assess the students ability to count the number of animal manipulatives, walk around
the room and check their answers. Also assess the groups based on the amount of correct
written number numerals and words. There are 10 different animals that need to be
matched with their offspring and be counted. If the students get 10/10 correct they will
receive an evaluative score of an A, if they get 8/10 correct they will receive an
evaluative score of a B, if they get 6/10 correct they will receive an evaluative score of
a C and anything below a 5/10 will receive a D.
