Introduction

The second exemplar I am going to include in my portfolio is the Data Profile Presentation we
created in our CSP 769: The Achievement Gap: Leadership, Advocacy and Systemic Change
course. The purpose of our data analysis for our school and a sister school was to disaggregate
data, identify equity and access issues, look at the achievement and achievement-related data,
identify strengths and areas to grow in. More importantly it was to break it down by grade level,
gender, ethnicity, and other factors to see which types of interventions will be needed to close the
gaps. By having to compare my fieldwork sites data and a sister school, which had similar
demographics, we can highlight some strengths or areas of growth they have to apply those
interventions within my fieldwork site.
Standard 22: Leadership
As a school counselor being a leader is one of our roles, so knowing and understanding the data
of my school is imperative for my fieldwork site, I have been able to implement some
interventions such as guidance lesson plans, small groups informational meetings and 1 on 1
interventions to close the gaps I found within the data. In addition, I shared s information to my
counseling team for them to also understand the trends at their school to further support our
students and add to what they have seen over the years that may not be as effective.
Standard 23: Advocacy
Understanding and disaggregating my schools data is crucial for me to advocate for my
students. I have learned which types of interventions need to be added to close the gaps. In order
to eliminate barriers and support positive learning we need to make sure our interventions are
effective. For instance, knowing my students are not graduating UC/CSU eligible made me
create presentations and small group informative session to understand the requirements and how
to assure you meet the requirements for the university. In addition, sharing this with the
counselors has us all on the same page to advocate for our students and add those support
services for them to excel and reach their potential.
Standard 28: Organizational and System Development
The data profile for my school has allowed me to comprehend and look at my school as a system
and how we need to assure to implement support programs and services in a systematic approach
to assure all students can benefit from the services and programs. Too often we focus on a
handful of students who need additional help and those who are excelling. With this approach, all

students will be served in an equitable manner and those who need additional services and
support will receive them. This also allows for all students to receive imperative information,
services and support.
Standard 30: Research, Program Evaluation and Technology
In order to complete this assignment, research had to be done. Websites like Dataquest,
California Healthy Kids Survey, CHKS, and the schools had to be used. In addition, getting
qualitative data such as interviewing students and surveying teachers was needed to look at the
school holistically. Lastly, looking at the sister school, state and district data was also needed to
assure we would be able to compare our school to those three. With that being said, we were able
to evaluate the schools data and identify strengths and areas of growth that need to be taken to
close gaps. Technology was used when converting all numbers into graphs and using PowerPoint
to present the data project on.
Reflection
I enjoyed this assignment the most. At first, it was tedious to look for data and create graphs for
what I have found. Nonetheless, upon completing the assignment, I was excited to share this data
with my counselors to see if they recognize the trends themselves or have tried to address closing
some gaps. I felt this was the most rewarding project I have done because I can use what I found
to implement appropriate interventions for my students who need extra services and support.
Also, I realized how imperative it is to understand the data of your school and know how to
access it. As a leader and advocate I need to know the trends, the strengths and areas of growth
for my school to better serve my students.
