Choose one of the characters and explain how he

represents one of the freudian personality theories.

In the story, Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, it shows many
examples of the freudian personality theories. The freudian personality
theories are, id, ego, and superego. I believe the the character in the Lord of
the Flies novel that represents superego the best is Piggy. Piggy represents
the civilization of the tribe. He does not represent the savage side. He tries to
keep everyone from turning savage because he understands the
consequences that would result if everyone turned savage. Before he makes a
decision he always looks at both outcomes, and tries to pick the one that will
benefit not just him but the whole tribe too. Ive been thinking, Piggy said,
about a clock. We could make a sundial. We could put a stick in the sand, and
then (Golding, 90). This quote shows the way Piggy thinks. He shows in
this scene the way he thinks about the situation and how he believes
something will benefit them. This is significant to Piggys superego, because
before this Piggy had some other ideas, but he finally confirmed with himself
that the sundial would work the best. He looked at all of the possibilities, and
came to the conclusion on one and went with it knowing it would be the best
choice. Piggy represents superego because he has the ability to understand
all situations and make the best decisions in tough times.
