Theterm'urban',asopposedtorural,isrelatedtotownsorcities.Urban
settlementisalargenucleatedsettlementinwhichthemajorityofthe
employedinhabitantsareengagedinnonagriculturalactivities.Urban
areasmaybedefinedbynationalgovernmentsaccordingtodifferent
criteriaforexample,size,populationdensity,occupationofthepeople,
andtypeoflocalgovernment.

Thisdivisionbetweenurbanandruralisarbitraryandthatiswhytoday
mostofscholarsusetheterm'ruralurbancontinuum'ratherthan
dichotomy.
TheCensusofIndiauntil1951definedanurbansettlementas:(i)every
municipality,(ii)allcivillinesnotincludedwithinthemunicipallimits,
(iii)everycantonment,and(iv)everyothercontinuouscollectionof
housesinhabitedbynotlessthan5,000persons.Itwascustomaryto
treatsomeplaces
withlessthan5,000inhabitantsastownsinformerprincelystatessince
theywereoflocalimportance.Thisdefinitionwasmodifiedin1971
Censustotreatallplacessatisfyingthefollowingconditionsastowns.
1.Allmunicipalcorporations,municipalboards,cantonmentsand
notifiedareas.
2.Alllocalitiesthoughnotinthemselveslocalbodiesbutformingpartof
acityortownagglomeration.
3.OtherplacessatisfyingallthethreeUNmentionedconditions:
(i)Populationexceeds5,000.
(ii)Atleast75percentofthemalewordpopulationengagesinnon
agriculturalpursuits,

(iii)Thedensityofpopulationexceedspersonspersquarekm.In1981
Censussomemichangeswereincorporatedwherebylivestock,forestry,
fishing,hunting,plantations,orchardetc.treatedasagriculturalactivity
andplaceshavingdistincturbancharacteristicsandphysicalamenities
likeindustrialarea,specialprojectarea,largehousingcolonies,placesof
touristinterest,railwaycoloniesetc.couldberegardedastownsatthe

discretionoftheDirectorofCensusOperationsinconsultationwiththe
concernedstategovernments.
Alltownsandurbanagglomerations,soidentified,aregroupedinto
followingsixclassesaccordingtopopulationsize:ClassIPopulationof
100,000andaboveClassIIPopulationof50,000to99,999ClassIll
Populationof20,000to49,999ClassIVPopulationof10,000to19,999
ClassVPopulationof5,000to9,999ClassVIPopulationoflessthan
5,000.
AccordingtotheconventionoftheIndianCensus,anyurbanplacewitha
populationexceeding1,00,000iscalledacity.
InUrbanGeographyurbansettlementsareclassifiedintofollowingsix
types:
1.UrbanVillageIthassemiurbancharacteristcsandisalsoknownas
urbancenter,markettown,semiurbantownandruraltown.Itdenotes
thetransitionstageofurbandevelopmentwhereinbothruralandurban
functionsarefoundinmixedform.
2.Townitisthesmallestunitofurbansettlement.Hereurbanfunctions
arewellmarkedalthoughthepossibilityofsomeruralactivitiesisnot
ruledout.
3.Citytheterm'city'hasbeenderivedfromtheLatinword'civitas'.Itis
afullfledgedurbanagglomerationdepictingpredominanceofurban
occupationsandcomplexinternalstructure.InIndiaanytownwitha
populationofonelakhoraboveistermedascity.
4.Metropolismeaning'mothercity'isalargecitywhichservesasa
regionalcapital.InIndiaacityhavingonemillionormorepopulationis
calledmetropolis.Accordingto1981Censustherewere12metropolitan
citiesinthecountrywhichincreasedto35in2001Census.Theseinclude
Mumbai,Kolkata,Delhi,Chennai,Bangalore,Hyderabad,Ahmadabad,
Pune,Surat,Kanpur,Jaipur,Lucknow,Nagpur,Patna,Indore,
Vadodara,Bhopal,Coimbatore,Ludhiana,Kochi,Vishakhapatnam,
Agra,Varanasi,Madurai,Meerut,Nashik,Jabalpur,Jamshedpur,
Asansol,Dhanbad,Faridabad,Allahabad,Amritsar,Vijayawadaand
Rajkotinthedescendingorderoftheirpopulationsize.
5.Megalopolisitdenotesalargeurbanregionformedbytheoutgrowth
ofmanymetropolises.ThetermwasfirstusedbyJeanGottmanforthe
urbanregionalongthenortheasternseaboardofU.S.A.Megalopolis
alsoexpressesthefullmaturestageofurbangrowth.Indiadoesnothave
anysuchmegalopolisbecauseitsurbanisationisyettoattainthis
maturity.
6.Conurbationitisanurbanregionconsistingofalargemetropolisand
anumberofsmalltownshuddledtogether.InIndiasuchconurbation
hasbeenformedbythemetropolitanregionofKolkataand85bigand
smalltownssituatedallaroundit.Itliesalongthebothbanksofthe
HugliRivercoveringatotalareaof569sq.km.alongtherightbankof
theRiveritextendsfromBansbariainthenorthtoUluberiainthe
south.SimilarlyKanchraparaandBajBajarethenorthernandsouthern
extremitiesofthisconurbationalongtheleftbankoftheriver.Fiftyfive
urbancentersoftheconurbationexhibitthepredominanceofindustrial
activities.Ofthese13specialiseinonlyoneindustry.Titagarhisfamous
foritspaperindustry.
SimilarlyBatanagarspecialisesinshoemakingandNaihati,Uttarpara,
Halishahr,Bali,Champdani,Kotrang,Uluberia,Bauria,Kamarhati,
BhadreswarandBajBajforjuteindustry.BesidesHaoraisanimportant
centreofrailtransport,Kanchraparaofrailworkshop,GardenReachof
shipbuilding,Ishapurofriflemaking,andChandannagarofcommercial
