Lesson Content
Anticipatory Set:
The teacher will ask the students if they have ever been to the
dentist. The teacher will read the book At the Dentist by Mari Schuh.
The teacher will stop throughout the book to point things out and
ask questions.
Model:
The teacher will bring out the sheet of the 15 steps of going to the
dentist. The teacher will look at and point to each step as they use
the think aloud strategy and sequence words to explain what is
happening at each step at the dentist. The teacher will then get the
pieces that match the 14 steps out and match each piece/step to
the correct step in order as they say what is happening at each
step.
Guided Practice:
The teacher and student will work together to complete matching
the steps and saying what is happening at each step as they match
the steps in the correct order. The teacher will give direct verbal and
fade it to indirect verbal as appropriate.
Independent Practice:
The student will be given the 14 steps with 5 steps whitened out.
The student must take the 5 steps they are given and place them
where they belong over the 5 spaces/steps that are whitened out.
The teacher will only give indirect verbal prompts as needed.
Closure:
The teacher will read a social story to the student about going to the
dentist and tie in the book from the opening whenever possible.
The teacher will work with the student to complete a 5 question
sheet about going to the dentist and then have the student color the
sheet.
