Rationale Statement
Statement of Standard Three - Learning Environments
The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and
collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement
in learning, and self motivation (NJPTSB, 2014, pg 4).
Name of Artifact: Classroom Management Plan and Layout
Date of Artifact: February 25, 2016
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01
Rationale Statement:
The purpose of the assignment was to create a Classroom Management Plan
and to design a classroom layout. My classroom management plan included the rules of
my classroom, consequences for breaking the rules, rewards for following the rules, and
the manner in which homework, tests, and projects will be assigned. This artifact directly
relates to Performances 3.1 of Standard Three which states, The teacher collaborates
with learners, families, and colleagues to build a safe, positive learning climate of
openness, mutual respect, support, and inquiry (4). I made it clear in my outline that
disrespecting other students will absolutely not be tolerated, and that I am hoping to
create a classroom environment where working together is encouraged.
What I learned about being a teacher while composing this artifact is how
essential being prepared for class is. As a student, I never thought much about being
prepared for class or understood why teachers got as upset as they did at students for
not being prepared. After I put my rules together with preparedness being one of them, I
realized how essential it is for students to be prepared to class. Forty minute classtimes

really are so short, so every minute in class is absolutely crucial. When students are not
prepared, it not only wastes their time, but the teachers time also. Not being prepared is
more detrimental towards a students education than I once though.
This artifact will absolutely be used in my future class. The rules are pretty
universal among high school classes and are most definitely appropriate. I very much
like the consequences and rewards system I came up with too because it treats my
students like adults, for the most part, and encourages good behavior. The manner in
which homework, tests, and projects will be given are also suitable for a high school
math class. The only thing that may not be used is the class layout. That depends a lot
on the high school I end up working for, but I will try my hardest to organize my class to
like my layout.
