Kyle Hartwig
Physical Education

Philosophy statement

The purpose of physical education is to teach the whole student, not just
their body and movement. Physical education provides the opportunity to teach
students about movement, strategies, teamwork, problem solving and health
related fitness. Each of these areas is addressed in the National Association for
Sport and Physical Educations (NASPE) standards and is important to teaching
the whole student.
Exposing students to various physical activities, sports, and methods of
fitness can better provide enjoyment of physical activity. I strive to safely provide
the means for students to enjoy physical activity, become more confident with
their abilities, increase their knowledge of health related fitness, and help them
find ways to continue to be physically active.
My major focus will be to make physical education class as enjoyable as
possible. This goal starts by providing a safe and comfortable environment. This
occurs when every student feels physically and emotionally safe. Enthusiasm and
respect for the students is also important to ensure an enjoyable environment. To

further develop respect and provide a fun environment I will be open with all
students and encourage them to challenge me in ways where there is the
opportunity to learn from each other.
I believe that including the students in curriculum selection is the best way
to provide enjoyment. This will help students feel much more involved in the
curriculum, rather than feeling force to participate in activities where students find
no personal meaning. I will allow students to help shape the course of study, where
they can select some of what they are learning, without neglecting their overall
development in physical education. By being involved in many physical activities,
both in and outside of school, students will see I live what I teach and hopefully
develop respect for not only me but their peers also. I can provide students with
the means and knowledge for living a healthy, active, lifestyle.
Students will be encouraged to find individual ways that work for them to
stay fit in a safe fashion, both physically and emotionally. Providing the
knowledge of how to be physically fit is not enough. I must seek to help students
continue to be physically active outside of class. My passion for physical activity
led me to the noble profession and I hope to leave a legacy of that passion within
my students.

Growth Plan

Year One:
During my first year of teaching I hope to create lesson plans that accommodate each and
every student inside of the classroom. I want to earn the respect of my peers by showing a
positive attitude each, and every day, and to also be there to lend a helping hand in

anyway I can! I will strive to develop positive relationships with my students and connect
with them on a deeper level. I also want my students to come to my class with a smile on
their face and also leave with a smile!

Long Term Goals

My long term goals include obtaining my masters degree. Another goal of mine is to
bring exciting, new programs to my school and be an advocate for physical education in
my district. I plan on-becoming a member of AAHPERD, NEA and Shape America. My
long term goals have always been to become a head basketball coach at a Jr. High or
High School level. Overall, I hope to be a positive role model in and outside of the
classroom and developing into great teacher, who is constantly learning and growing
throughout their career.

Vision Statement
Philosophy:
> My major focus will be to make physical education class as enjoyable as
possible. This goal starts by providing a safe and comfortable environment.

Goals:
> My goal is to teach my students the fundamental skills and concepts of games
and activities, to provide them with the tools to use for a lifetime of physical
activity.

> I strive to safely provide the means for students to enjoy physical activity,
become more confident with their abilities, increase their knowledge of health
related fitness, and help them find ways to continue to be physically active.

What I want:
> To Exposing students to various physical activities, sports, and methods of
fitness can better provide enjoyment of physical activity.
> For students to build leadership skills and to have a basic understanding of
health and fitness.
> To further develop respect and provide a fun environment I will be open with all
students and encourage them to challenge me in ways where there is the
opportunity to learn from each other.

Dear Parents,
It is hard to believe that summer is over and school has started again. We are looking
forward to having your child in physical education class this year. In order to have a safe
and productive learning environment the school-wide discipline plan will be enforced.
Grade Policy in physical education is based primarily on three areas:
* Participation
* Attitude
* Effort
If there is a time when your child can not participate due to injury or illness please send a
note to the school. If longer that 3 days we must have a doctors excuse, otherwise it will be

considered an excused absence. Please make sure that your child brings tennis shoes
every day, along with the uniform provided by the school.
Physical education not only teaches the psycho-motor domain but the cognitive and
affective domains as well. Our goal is to have every student experience success. Good
sportsmanship and teamwork are very important not only in the gym but in real life
situations too. Good sportsmanship is always required in class!
Health instruction will also be incorporated into the physical education curriculum.
Students will have health instruction during their physical education time one day a week.
The two grades will be combined for a PE/Health grade each grading period. Students will
be learning about various health-related topics including character education. Students will
be graded on the E, G, S, N, U scale.
(E-excellent G-good S-satisfactory N-needs improvement U-unsatisfactory)

Behavior Problem
Hello, My name is Mr. Hartwig and your son Jake is currently in my physical
education class during 4th hour. First thing I would like to say is that I know Jake is
really a smart kid and he works extremely hard in my class. His effort in everything we
do makes me proud to have a student with that much drive. For the past couple weeks we
have been having a problem with Jake talking during inopportune times. Jake is a well
liked student and has many friends in the class, but the talking has been a disruption to
me and the class. I know Jake is a great kid and I really want to work on this problem
together. One thing I will try with Jake to see if we can get him back on track is to sit him

out of the class for him to refocus, to reflect on what he is doing wrong and how he can
correct it. If this does not help Jake I think it would be best for us to all sit down and talk
together. If the problem still persists after our meeting I will have to send Jake to the care
room. I hope we can talk soon so that we can find a way to resolve this problem. Contact
me at 480-276-3148 or email me at kdhartwi@asu.edu
