Grade/Topic:2nd grade, Chinese New Year
Briefly describe the students in your class, including those with special
needs, explain how you will meet the needs of all learners.
This 2nd grade classroom consists of 22 students; 8 girls and 14 boys.
There are a few students with IEPs within the classroom, so I will
accommodate and meet their needs, along with any other student in the
classroom. This could include repeating directions, giving more time, or
explaining specific details in correlation with the lesson.
2.
What are your expectations for this lesson? What do you want students to
learn and be able to do with the knowledge?
Students will learn how traditional Chinese New Year lanterns are made
by having a hands-on activity where they are creating their own lanterns.
In addition, students will be able to decorate and make their lanterns
unique to themselves.

7.
Identify what you will do to set clear standards of conduct and behavior
management of student behavior.
Since the classroom rules are already intact, I will review different rules
pertaining to my specific lesson. I will remind students that they need a
quiet raising hand when they want to say something.

Procedure:
12.
After the transition of morning meeting, I will have students get into
their rows to start the lesson
I will explain to the students that we will be learning about the
Chinese New Year, but specifically about the lanterns Chinese people
make
Before going into the lesson, I will go over any rules that I feel are
needed, specifically raising your hand when wanting to say something
and not speaking when others are talking
After going over the rules, I will ask the prior knowledge questions
stated in #10
I will pull up the Scholastic News about the Chinese New Year and ask
for one student with a quiet hand raised to tell me what the title is.
I will ask the class if there is a caption on the front page
After we went over different sections of the first page, I will turn to the
next page.
I will ask students if they can tell me where the sub-headings
Once the sub-headings are found, I will start to read the first subheading and the information below it
In between the readings, I will emphasize the importance of each subheading in correlation with the text underneath it
After we finish reading, I will ask the students to think about the word
sequence
I will define what a sequence is and its importance in this lesson
As a class, we will order the steps of making a lantern based from the
information from our reading
I will then start to model what is expected to happen during the
activity
Once I modeled the activity, I will send students back to their desks
and call tables up to choose their lantern of choice
Once each table has their lantern, they will have to follow the
directions on the paper.
When there is about five minutes left, I will ask the students to come to
the rug
I will review with the lantern, the three major steps of making a
Chinese lantern.
I will call the different tables for students to grab their materials for
Wilson
background knowledge about the Chinese New Year will help me know
how much information I need to present.
13.
14.
Identify what informal and/or formal assessments you will use to monitor
student learning.
The questions I provide will activate any prior knowledge of the Chinese
New Year, so then I can informally access their full knowledge on the
topic. By going over sequencing and its purpose in this reading, I will
observe if students understand sequencing by going around and checking
the students sequencing activity.
