Virginia SOL/National Standard:

3.13 The student will read temperature to the nearest degree from a Celsius
thermometer and a Fahrenheit thermometer. Real thermometers and physical
models of thermometers will be used.
Measurable Lesson Objective(s):
Students will be able to read a thermometer to the nearest degree.
Students will be able to give an approximate temperature based on what season it
is.
Students will be able to determine appropriate clothes to wear based on the given
temperature outside.
Materials/Technologies/Resources Needed:
-Brain Pop Jr video on Temperature:
https://jr.brainpop.com/math/measurement/temperature/
-SmartBoard lesson on temperature
-Reading Thermometers Worksheet
-Student Thermometers
-White boards, markers, and erasers
Assessment (Formative and/or Summative):
Students will complete a measuring temperature worksheet for homework.
Students will tell me something they learned today in math when they leave.
Listening to student answers throughout the lesson.
Anticipatory Set (Hook & Agenda)

Teacher will:
What have we been talking about the
past few days? (measurement) We
have talked about how to measure lots
of different things. What are some of
them? (Length, weight, volume) Today,
we are talking about measuring
something different.

Teaching Process & Modeling (Content is presented, accessed or built)

Guided Practice & Checking for Understanding
Independent Practice
There is no prescribed order to this section; you must tailor the order to the students and the content.
This should be the longest portion of your lesson plan.

Teacher will:
Put up the Thermometer
SmartBoard lesson. Like we have
talked about before, there are a
few different ways to measure
temperature. What are the two
units of measurement that we
will use. Can anyone tell me
what those were?
Ask questions for students about
Fahrenheit such as: About what
is the temperature outside
today? What could the
temperature be on a warm day
outside? How about when it
starts to snow?
Pass out practice thermometers
and have students take out their
white boards to practice reading

Students will:

questions

Accommodations/Diff

students that will
have a hard time

a temperature. I will put

temperatures on the SmartBoard
and ask students to show me
that on their thermometer. Also,
I will ask students to read the
thermometer on the board and
write down the temperature on
their white boards.
Give examples for students and
ask them to come up with some
of their own problems. Do
Fahrenheit first and then switch
to Celsius.
Get students to think about what
they would wear outside when it
is a certain temperature. Use the
next slide to get students
started. They can work with the
people around them as I give a
temperature, and ask them
which of the clothes they should
wear outside.
Then move to the four seasons,
thinking about what the
temperature could be, what you
would wear outside, and what
season it is. Have practice
questions for students and have
students come up with questions
for the class.
For homework, students will
complete a Reading the
Temperature worksheet.
