Materials and Resources

4-3.1: Recall that Earth is one of many planets in the solar

system that orbit the Sun.
Describe the lessons activities and content to provide a clear overview of the lesson.

To begin, I will write the standard, indicator, and objectives on the board before the
students come in the classroom. Then I will explain to the students that we will be
covering the solar system in class today. I will put up a KWL chart and use Popsicle
sticks so students can come write on the chart. After the KWL chart, I will put on the
video which will begin to show students what exactly we are learning. Afterwards, we
will go on to our guided practice which will be the students taking notes of the planets
and their characteristics.
What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson? Make sure that your
objective(s) are measurable.

Without the aid of class notes, students will be able to state the
planets in the solar system, and explain their location and
characteristics with 80% accuracy.

How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material?
How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept?
How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English?

For students who do not understand the material, I will work with them during
intervention to provide them additional resources about what we have covered in
class.

For the students who have already mastered the concept, I will encourage them to
read more in depth about the solar system and complete the worksheets attached.

For my ELL students, I will make sure to read with them aloud the information, and if at
all possible, see if I can get the work translated for them.
Why is it important for the students to learn this content?

It is important for the students to learn this content because it is important for them to
know that a whole universe exists outside of what they see around them.
What materials and supplies are needed to help your students achieve the stated
objectives? What will the teacher need? What will the students need? What other
resources are needed? Will you use resource speakers?

Anticipatory Set

The materials and supplies needed are the SMARTboard, dry erase board, laptop
computer, iPads, art supplies, and textbooks.

The teacher will need the dry erase board

The materials needed for the students are their science notebooks to take notes and
their iPads to view pictures of the planets.
What will you do to motivate the students and get their attention? What is the hook that
will serve as a focus for the lessons activities?

To get my students attention, I will ask them questions that would primarily be asked
in social studies, such as what city, state, country, continent, planet we live on. Then
proeed to tell them we are working on the solar system.

Technology

How will I find out what students already know about this topic?

In order to find out what the students already know about the topic, I will begin with a
KWL chart.
What will I do to show students what is expected?

I will make a chart on Microsoft Word to show on the SMARTboard for students to
model the chart in their notes for the characteristics of the planets from the textbook.
What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task?

Together, we will view a powerpoint of the solar system. This powerpoint will include
the planets, their order, and whether they are inner or outer planets. Students will also
complete the worksheet Draw the Solar System.
What questions will you ask to determine if students understand so far? What techniques
or strategies will be used to determine if students understand so far?

The questions I will ask are: what number planet is this from the sun? Because of its
distance from the sun, which planets might be hot/cold; What is the pneumonic device
for us to remember the order of the planets?

The techniques I will use are ask, pause, call; and also use popsicle sticks to call on
the students to check for understanding.
What will students do by themselves to show that they have internalized the knowledge?

Students will complete the worksheet Planets in Motion

How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences? How will you wrap up
the lesson to reinforce concepts taught during the lesson?

To conclude the lesson, I will ask students if it were possible, which planet they would
live on and ask them to turn it in as a ticket out the door.
What will students do to demonstrate what they have learned?

Students will complete a worksheet which makes them name planets where they are in
orbit.
What can students do at home or in the classroom to apply the knowledge or skills? How
could you use your colleagues or community agencies to improve student performance?

In order to see if the students can apply their knowledge, a model of the solar system
can be made at home or in the classroom as a project.

My colleagues could dress in certain colors to portray a certain planet and have the
students guess which planet they are. This would be a fun activity for the kids,

Also, I could ask my colleagues about resources that could be used for this lesson.

Lastly, research on the NASA website can be made as an extension activity for the kids
about astronauts, astronomers, etc.
How will you use technology to assist students with learning the concepts? What technology will you
use to enhance the delivery and comprehension of your content?

I will use the SMARTboard for the students to see and interact, a laptop, and allow the students
to use their iPads to assist them with learning the concepts.
How will you connect this lesson with other content areas across the curriculum?
The Arts: The students can use art materials to design their own model of the solar system on their
tables.

Connection Across the

Curriculum

Health: Students can demonstrate whether or not they would be able to live on other planets besides
Earth.
Physical Education: An obstacle course game can be set up around the classroom and the students
have to start at the Sun and make it through the solar system in order of the location of the planets
until they reach the end.
Math: Students can find the exact number of the planets distances from the Sun and compare them.
English Language Arts: Students can read a passage entitled The Solar System and the main ideas

of each paragraph.
Social Studies: Students will look at different pictures to show how the planet Earth has changed over
the years.

PART III: REFLECTION

Strengths

Weaknesses
Suggestions for
Improvement

Describe the strengths of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management.
Describe the strengths of student engagement.
The students were very engaged during this lesson. They got to learn a song and mnemonic device to
help them learn the order of the planets. For classroom management, a warning was given if students
began to misbehave. The second time, dojo points were taken. Students were also given points for
positive behaviors.
Describe the weaknesses of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management.
Describe the weaknesses of student engagement.
The students used choral responses as one of the instructional techniques, through this technique I
didnt know which students truly understood the lesson or were just repeating what they heard.
What would you change when teaching this lesson again?
When teaching this lesson again, I would include more visuals, videos, or interactives for the students.
