Motivation and Introduction:

1. Students will go about their usual morning routine with their normal
classroom teacher - Mat session with their teacher

2. Students will then be introduced to the Notre Dame Students - Still

seated on the mat
3. ND students (Ebony) will introduce their activities to students and
give a brief explanation of the activities to students and model what
they have to do on an iPad so they can see exactly what they are
supposed to do

Story Creator Example

to show and model to

Today we will be segmenting words

Using the iPads we will create a story using the app Story
When you get your iPads I would like you to unlock them and
click the Story Creator app that will located on the bar at the
bottom of the iPad
After you have opened the app you will click on the (+) sign at
the bottom of the page. This will let you create a new book
Then you will take a picture of you and your partner to put on
the cover, this way you know what book is your
After that you will begin making your book
In the middle of the desk their will be different parts of
different words. Together you must segment the letters
together to make a full word
Once you have made a word, write it down on the book using
the crayon icon
After you've written down the word, you and your partner can
record yourself saying the word and it will automatically add it
to your book
You do not have to worry about saving your work as it will do
it automatically
Not all students will be able to have a go at the same time so
some of you will be doing other activities while you wait
If you cant remember the instructions don't worry I will keep
reminding you as we go and if you have any trouble just sit
nicely with you hand in the air for me to come and help you
4. Do a quick demonstration of how it should turn out by making one
with your own word and show them an example you prepared
before class
5. Once you have finished showing students the examples group
them in pairs (Preferably 2-3 pairs at a desk)
6. Select students you wish to go on iPads first (Would be a good
idea to have students you think will be a bit slower at doing the
activity first allowing them more time)

7. Then instruct the remaining students to choose from an activity that

has been set up prior to lesson - These activities will be based on
segmenting words to prepare the remaining students for the book
making activity

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key

8. Once students are either at an iPad or an activity instruct them to

Story Creator - Easy
Story Book Maker for
9. The iPads will be monitored by teachers - Ideally there should be a

teacher at each desk to help students with any difficulties
Mobile Apps
10.Help students take pictures of themselves as this may be difficult
for them
Bits of segmented
11.Once students begin their story look around and check for any
words for students to
students having difficulties
put together (And
12.Assist them with making their book and help them to create the
pictures to help them
segmented words if they look like they are having trouble
make the words easier 13. Encourage students to spell out the words
14.Help them to record their voices if necessary
15.Once students have been at the iPads for 20 minutes instruct
them to finish the word they are own ad swap over with another
pair who have not had a go
16.Once the new pair is at the iPad begin steps again
17.Once the steps are repeated and students have been at the iPads
for 20 minutes instruct them to finish the words they are on and put
away the iPads - with the charger side facing up (To make
plugging them in to charge easier)
18.Instruct children to sit on floor once they have finished packing

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)

18.Once students are all seated begin mat session to close the
19. Ask students about the activity, etc and get them to tell you some
things they learnt, liked and disliked, etc
Anecdotal Notes - teacher will take anecdotal notes on how
students performed the activity, their difficulties, strengths, students
that needed help, students that could do the activity fairly easy, etc
Objective Checklist - Tick off students that were able to meet the
lesson objectives and leave room for any notes about the student
Class discussion - Find out from the students what they liked about
the activity and what they didn't, what they had trouble with and
what they found easy, what they would like to do next time in order
to help you plan for next time
Observe children and how they react to the technology
